Chapter 1: First Day at Grimmauld Place

It was a hot summer morning at Grimmauld Place. It had been a day since Claire had arrived there. The sun seemed to shine brightly through the windows, bringing in much needed light into the run-down, dark house. Claire couldn't help but feel as though the clear blue sky and bright sun were taunting her. You see, while most kids would be out enjoying the fresh summer air, Claire was stuck inside cleaning. She was dressed in a pair of ripped, stained jeans, a short-sleeved black shirt, and beat-up black combat boots. Her long brown curly hair was pulled into her normal hairstyle of a ponytail. She was currently in the living room trying to clean the windows. Claire swore she'd been cleaning the same spot on the window for at least half an hour.

"C'mon," Claire muttered furiously trying to get the stain off the window. "Get off already."

"You know, the first sign that you're insane is that you start talking to inanimate objects," came the voice of her uncle Sirius Black.

"Insane is a strong word, I prefer the words mentally creative," Claire said absentmindedly, still attempting to remove the stain.

After a few more seconds, Claire groaned in frustration.

"I give up!" Claire threw the dirty rag on the floor. "That stain is evil! It doesn't even look like I got a smudge off it! Remind me again why we can't use magic to clean the house?"

"Well," Sirius began, "Your mother is the only one here who can legally use magic. Besides she said it builds character,"

"The only thing that should have character is a house. Building character is so boring!" Claire complained, flopping down onto the tattered black sofa. "Aren't summers suppose to be fun?"

Sirius chuckled. "Not when we have a whole house to get in order."

"I don't see you cleaning," Claire said.

"Well, I'm an adult. I can make my own decisions. Carina is my sister, not my mother. Therefore, I don't have to listen to her." Sirius said simply.

"Don't have to listen to me, eh?" Carina walked into the room.

"Oh, Carina," Sirius's voice slightly crack. "How long have you been standing there?"

Carina rolled her eyes. "Long enough to know that if you don't start cleaning something in the next ten seconds I'll turn you into a broom and sweep the floor with you,"

There was a loud bang from upstairs and the smell of smoke filled the air. Carina groaned in frustration.

"I told him not to work on the TARDIS. Does no one listen?" Carina said.

"FLITHY BLOOD TRAITORS AND HALF-BREEDS IN MY HOUSE!" A shrilly voice echoed throughout the house.

"What is that?" Claire said, covering her ears.

"That is your grandma," Carina said, marching upstairs.

"She sounds lovely," Claire said sarcastically. "I thought she was dead?"

"She is, but there's a portrait of her upstairs." Sirius stated.

"You haven't tried to take it down?" Claire asked.

"Tried?" Sirius scoffed. "That's an understatement. She's magically glued to the wall."

"Why don't you use a silencing charm on her or something?" Claire suggested.

Sirius smiled brightly. "Of course! I don't know why we didn't think about that before."

Sirius disappeared upstairs. Claire then heard her mom yell, "Claire, go check on your father!"

Claire walked upstairs trying not to feel too creeped out by the house-elf heads on the walls whose eyes seemed to follow her. When she reached the second landing, she saw one of the doors opened and could hear her father talking to himself. Apparently, he did that a lot.

"I knew it was blue to blue and not green to red!" she heard her father say.

Claire opened the door to the room. The TARDIS stood in the middle of the room and the door was open. Claire could hear a sort of banging sound coming from it. Claire walked into the TARDIS and saw that it was empty.

"Dad? Doctor? Where are you—?"

"What are you doing in here?" Claire jumped in fright as she turned around to see her father.

"Geez, a little warning next time before you give me a heart attack!" Claire complained.

"You've got two hearts you'll be fine," The Doctor said waving his hand dismissively.

"Two hearts?" Claire furrowed her eyebrows.

"Your mother and I didn't tell you? Since you're part Timelord you have two hearts," The Doctor said as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world.

"Oh, great. Thanks for telling me now," Claire said sarcastically.

"Shouldn't you be helping your mother and uncle clean the house?" The Doctor had begun to tinker with various switches on the control panel.

"Shouldn't you?" Claire countered. "Anyway, mom sent me to check on you. By the way, what exactly are you doing?"

"Updating the TARDIS." He began pressing a few buttons and talking to himself. "I wonder why its not reading the electromagnetic fields."

Claire then saw him pull out a familiar object.

"Hey!" Claire exclaimed. "What are you doing with my Sonic Screwdriver?"

"What are you talking about? This is my Sonic Screwdriver." The Doctor said as he continued to fix the panel with the Sonic Screwdriver. He then stopped and turned his head towards Claire. "Wait just a second, how did you know about the Sonic Screwdriver?"

"I read it in a book," Claire replied.

The Doctor looked at Claire apprehensively. "Show me this book."

"Here it is," Claire had returned a few minutes later with the blue journal and her Sonic Screwdriver.

The Doctor took the book from her and opened it. He pulled out a pair of black glasses and slipped them on analyzing the pages curiously. He flipped through the book for a few minutes.

"Who sent you this?" The Doctor asked.

"Some person named River Song," Claire said.

"River Song? River Song. Hmmm," The Doctor stared at the book. "Why does that name sound familiar?"

Claire shrugged. "I thought the same thing when I first read the name. So, you don't know who it is either?"

The Doctor shook his head. "I wish I did though. This person seems to know an awful lot about aliens and their technologies. The question is how. Show me the screwdriver."

Claire handed him her Sonic Screwdriver. After a few moments, the Doctor gave it back to her.

"How did this River Song person get that?" The Doctor said to himself.

"The only way we'd be able to answer that is if we find out the identity of River Song," Claire said.

"That's it!" The Doctor exclaimed. "Brilliant! Now the next question how do we find River Song?"

"Do I look like an Encyclopedia to you?" Claire retorted.

The Doctor ignored her and rushed over to the control panel, pulling out a rectangular screen seemingly out of nowhere. He began furiously typing on a keyboard that also seemed to appear out of thin air.

"What are you doing?" Claire questioned.

However, the Doctor seemed to not pay attention to her as he finished typing and began pressing various buttons and pulling levers on the control panel. The Doctor then looked at Claire with excitement shining in his brown eyes.

"How would you feel about taking your first ride in the TARDIS?"

Claire furrowed her eyebrows. "Shouldn't we be helping clean the house?"

"Do you really want to be cleaning the house?" The Doctor said.

Claire shook her head. "Touché. You do know mom is going to be angry when she finds out about this, right?

The Doctor waved his hand dismissively. "I can handle your mom. She's not too bad when she's angry."

"Alright, I'm in," Claire said.

"Good." The Doctor smiled, pulling a lever on the control panel.

The familiar sound of metal scraping against concrete filled the air. Then the TARDIS urged forward, as though someone had suddenly stomped on the gas pedal of a car. Claire had to hold on to the control panel as the TARDIS seemed to be trying to throw them around. The TARDIS then came to a rough stop.

Claire glared at her father. "Next time warn me that it's a bumpy ride."

"We're here!" The Doctor ignoring her, walking over to the door. The Doctor threw the doors open. "Welcome to the 51st Century!"

They walked out of the TARDIS into a vast room with bookshelves as tall as two-story buildings filled with perhaps billions of books; or maybe even more.

"So, in the future, Earth is covered with bookshelves filled with books? Hermione'll be excited to hear that," Claire said.

"No, this isn't Earth. This is the Library. It's a planet in the 51st century and it has all the information we'll ever need to find this River Song person," The Doctor said.

"You do realize that this place must contain over a billion books, right?" Claire said.

"That's why you'll use your Sonic Screwdriver. Let me see it for a second," He took her screwdriver and pressed several buttons before handing it back to her. "Now, I set it to find any books relating to River Song. We'll split up to cover more ground. You go left and I'll go right. Allons-y!"

"No one says that," Claire said as her father disappeared.

She rolled her eyes and then turned her attention to the screwdriver.

"So, are you going to show me the way?" Claire asked it.

The screwdriver then began to light up with a red light towards one of the aisles. She followed the light and walked down the aisle. The red light seemed to go on forever before she reached the end of it. When Claire reached the end of the light, she looked at the bookshelves. Scanning the shelves, her eyes caught one of the bindings titled The Last Great Time War. Curious, Claire removed it from the shelf and flipped to the first page.

The Last Great Time War involved two alien species: Time Lords of Gallifrey against the Daleks of Skaro.

The Time Lords were considered one of the oldest and most technologically powerful races in all the universe. In the very distant past, they fought a genocidal war against the Great Vampires, which led to a catastrophic loss of Time Lords. This led them to renounce violence.

Time Lords, as their name implies, are guardians of time, having the abilities to travel to the future or back to the past. It is said they are able to see every moment of every second of time in their minds. This ability allowed them to see the power-hungry Daleks of Skaro trying to dominate the universe.

The Daleks of Skaro were an extraterrestrial race of cyborgs created by the scientist Davros during the final years of a thousand year war against the Thals. Davros genetically modified his race and integrated them with a tank-like, robotic shell. The final modification was removing their ability to feel pity, compassion, or remorse. This soon led to the Daleks believing they were the supreme race in all the universes. They began a conquest of universal domination and extermination.

The Time Lords had no choice but to stop the Daleks from conquering the universe. This led to the Last Great Time War leading to the extinction of both races and the destruction of their planets.

"Did you find something?" Claire looked up to see her father.

"How?" Claire asked.

The Doctor furrowed his eyebrows confused.

"How did you escape Gallifrey during the Last Great Time War?" Claire clarified.

A sorrowful look fell upon the Doctor's face as he glanced at the book she was holding and he sighed.

"It's a complicated long story," he said, a distant look on his face.

"Then you'd better start now," Claire stated.

The Doctor was silent for a few moments before he began to speak. "I wasn't there for the beginning of the battle. I knew that Gallifrey had been attacked by the Daleks, but I thought we'd be able to defeat them. I didn't get involved until I saw a Dalek kill a child. From that point I was involved. The war became more and more gruesome, millions were killed and brought back to life every second—"

"What do you mean they were brought back to life?" Claire asked.

"Regenerations. Every Time Lord is given thirteen regenerations. So, basically thirteen lives." The Doctor answered.

"Since I'm part Time Lord would I have regenerations?" Claire asked.

"I'm not sure." He replied.

"Ok, continue," Claire said.

"Right. So, as I was saying the war was turning darker and darker every day. Eventually, the Daleks were able to break through our protective shields surrounding our planet and that's when we knew someone from our side was helping the Daleks." The Doctor continued.

"How did you know that?" Claire asked.

"Only a Time Lord knows how to deactivate the shields. And we soon discovered who betrayed our kind." The Doctor answered.

"Who was it?" Claire questioned.

"He was my childhood friend. He went by the name of the Master." The Doctor went silent for a few moments.

Claire processed everything that her father had just told her and all she could think about was why would someone betray their own kind?

"Why would he do that?" Claire asked.

"Power." The Doctor said simply. "That is in fact what 99.9% of all wars ever fought are over. I assume the Daleks told him he'd be able to rule beside them."

"Didn't he know bad guys always flake out in the end?" Claire said. "And what happened after you found out that he was the one who disarmed his own planet?"

"I took him to the high council and he had all thirteen of his regenerations wiped." The Doctor explained.

"So, he died?" Claire asked.

The Doctor nodded. "After that, we continued to fight off the Daleks the best we could. The days dragged on with more and more people running out of regenerations and being killed. Our planet was destroyed beyond repair and so I had to make a decision. The hardest decision of my life. I had no choice but to choose this decision because if I didn't not only would my race be extinct but millions more until the only beings left were the Daleks. I stole the Moment from the vault and I destroyed Gallifrey along with the Daleks."

"You killed your own race?" Claire said in astonishment.

"And I regret it. I will live with the regret for the rest of my life. However, it was the only choice. It was either have them be killed or the whole universe be destroyed." The Doctor said solemnly.

"But why weren't you killed?" Claire asked.

"In order to set off the Moment you have to be on a completely different planet. I went off and set off the Moment on a different planet. Since then I've been traveling through time," he said.

"But you have a time machine? Why can't you go back and save Gallifrey?" Claire asked.

"There are fixed points in time and that is one of them. I see all of time in my mind and in every scenario Gallifrey has to be destroyed or a paradox could rip apart the very fabric of the universe." He explained.

"Well, that's hardly fair," Claire muttered.

"Life's not meant to be fair. Life's just meant for you to live. To experience the highs and lows. To better yourself from your failures." He replied. "Now, c'mon. We'll come later to find out about River Song. We've been gone for a while. We'd better head home before your mom notices were missing."

Claire followed her dad back to the TARDIS. He pressed several buttons and then pulled the lever on the control panel. The sound of metal scraping concrete filled the air again and they rode a bumpy ride back to Grimmauld Place. When the TARDIS came to a stop, Claire and the Doctor stepped out of the TARDIS to be met with a fuming Carina.

"You two better have a good excuse as to why you decided to go time traveling," Carina said, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Well, dad," Claire said, patting his arm. "Why don't you explain that to mom?"

"That's not fair," He complained.

"Weren't you the one who said you could handle mom if she found out we left?" Claire teased.

Claire walked out of the room as she heard her father stuttering trying to explain to her mother why they decided to go time traveling instead of cleaning the house. Claire had gone back down to the living room to resume cleaning the windows.

"I did tell him she'd be angry," Claire said to herself as she continued to clean the spot of the window.

So, this chapter gave you a bit of background on the Doctor's history. I changed up some things about the Time War so it would fit with the plot I'm working on. Did I give the Time War justice? Did you enjoy the appearances of Sirius and Carina in the chapter? They'll be more of them in the next chapter. This chapter basically focused on Claire and the Doctor daughter/father relationship. What do you think of their relationship so far? I can't wait to write the rest of this book. Surprises are coming. Thank you to the new followers: demon19027, nomadeagle, Carpe-Libri, .7, backbiter818, and Nefracture.

FROM BOOK 3

demon19027: Thank you!

NicoleR85: You'll find out towards the end of this book why Jason was so cold towards Claire.

Rainpelt the Doctor: I know right! Claire was in such a good mood and then her mom is like I know you just got off school but here's a broom get to cleaning.

Not-Famous-Yet: Aw, thank you! Neither can I. Especially fifth year. That'll be interesting to write.

Timewalker: Thank you. As far as the story behind Carina and the Doctor and how they met it will probably be in this book. If not it'll definitely be in the next. I just have to make it fit in somehow.

Ghostwriter71: Thank you. The Doctor was a bit hard for me to write at first for some reason. I'm glad you think that I did him well. In this chapter it was a bit harder to write him because he's alway so cheerful in my opinion and rarely ever sad. I loved writing that scene where Carina confronts the Dursleys. I just pictured her doing something like that and I thought what the hell. Carina did know Petunia. You'll find out later on how. Lily and Carina were best friends though.

Guest: Claire definitely will not be a champion for the Triwizard Tournament. Like you said most of the fan fictions do that and I don't think there's a reason for her to be in the tournament.

auknowntimelord: Thank you!

WhovianGeronimo: Barty Crouch Jr doesn't look like the Doctor. Just to make that clear. At least not in this fan fiction. I have a different plot for this that I'm developing at the moment. I'm glad you enjoyed Carina's talk with the Dursleys it was my favorite part to write.
