Author Note

This was a Sword Art Online fanfiction I started in the seventh grade. I never really finished it, or ever got into the mood to continue it, but I figured after all these years I can let others see it rather than have it rot away in my old documents. Enjoy, feel free to let me know what you think.

Part 1

Chapter 1: The "Other" World

Darkness. That was the first thing he was aware of. He didn't know who he was. Or what he was. Was he human? What even was a human? A creature of sorts, that he knew.

He knew...What exactly did he know? He knew of Earth. That was the world of mankind. He knew of humans, how there were boys and girls, and ones of all of different races.

He understood the ways of the world. After thinking for an undefined time, he confirmed that he was indeed human. He knew he was a boy. He was Japanese. 17 years old.

But he couldn't feel his body. He didn't even know his own name. Who was he?

Suddenly, without a sound or warning, he was standing. He looked down. He was barefoot. Barefoot? That meant he had feet. That's when he realized he had a body. He

touched his face, his chest, his arms...Yes, he was definitely real. Looking around, it seemed like he was in the middle of some gathering place. He was standing on top of a

large wooden circle outside, with stone bleachers in front and to the sides of him. Behind him was what looked like the ruins of a stone archway or gate. The sun was out, and

it felt warm on his skin. He soon realized that not only was he barefoot, but he was wearing nothing but a pair of blue boxers.

"How does your body feel?" He quickly looked up at the sudden voice-The first real sound he had heard. At the top of the bleachers was a tall man wearing a lab coat over a

button-up shirt and loosened tie. He stumbled for words, his first words; "Uh, uhm, ah..."

He couldn't think of anything. The man gave distant smile, and lightly chuckled. "I see you're still getting used to it. Here, why don't you put these on?" He held his hand out,

and suddenly, from nowhere a blue stream of what seemed to be random numbers and letters started flying into his hand and forming some kind of square. "These should

work for you for now."

He didn't know what he was talking about or what had just happened, but the boy quickly made his way up the stone bleachers to the man in the lab

coat. When he got to the top, he saw that the man was holding out a neatly folded plain white T-shirt and black jeans. "Th-thank you," the boy said,

in a shaky voice. As he got dressed, the man in the lab coat started talking again.

"My name is Kayaba Akihiko."
