It was never really real. Although I think we pretended so hard that it almost was real.

My friends and I have been taking care of Rose's son for 14 years now. Rose, who was my best friend (well even more then that) died in the birth of her son Steven.

When he was only about 3, we had to take him in. His father was unable to take care of Steven. He was practically homeless. So like any good friend, we took care of him.

It was Rose's younger sister Amethsyt, our friend Garnet and I.

We knew that Steven at his young age couldn't understand what was going on, so I guess we made up this story where we were interglactic gem based superheros. It seemed like something that would be alot more intresting, and alot less scary for the poor kid.

I think the easiest way to explain the story would be to split it down by character.

Lets start with Rose and Steven.

As I said before Rose had died during the birth of Steven, but we told Steven something almost bizarrely different. We told Steven that Rose had essentially given her life for Steven, thats not far from the truth, but we said that she couldn't live because of her gem powers and she gave up her form to have Steven. This is something I could definetly see Rose doing, she saw something special in every human she met, She was loving and special.

Now Lets go to Rose's younger sister, Amy, or Amethyst. She is was what you would call an accident. Her and Roses mom didn't expect Amethyst, and just like Rose would, she died as she gave birth to Amethyst. Amethyst always had great regrets about her birth and somehow that translated into our pretend as her being made in a horrible magical accident. In both worlds its the same, Amethyst isn't a bad thing she was just a resault of a bad thing. Yet no matter what happened Amethyst has always had this carefree and somewhat childish personality. Then again she is only 19 now.

Then there is Garnet, or Gabrielle. Garnet is very kind hearted and stong. She made up most of the crystal gem story. There is not much saying in her character, besides Ruby and Sapphire and fusion in general. Fusion is suppose to be when two gems combine, sometimes the fusion is someone else sometimes it isn't. For example, my sister Opal, was the first "fusion." She was or pretended to be a fusion of me and Amethyst. Garnet is supposed to be a fusion also. Steven had read something saying that the gem Garnet was a mix of two or more gems, so he thought Garnet had to be a fusion, so we pretended that Garnet was a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire also know as Garnet's little sister, who is named Ruby, and her partner Stephanie.

Then there is me Pearl, that is my real name, I'm not much. I was just Rose's best friend. Rose was a friend that i would protect with my life. I would hurt anyone who tried to hurt her. I loved her. Not just as a friend but... Nevermind.. She had loved someone much more then me, Greg.

We also had some enemies, for say. We had some unplesant neighbors. Yalonda Aka Yellow Dimond and her daughters, Perri (Peridot) and Jasmine (Jasper). They seem to dislike us for no real reason, besides possibly that Yalonda is extremely homophobic. Perri has seemed to grow more fond of us, however.

Then there is also Laina (Lapis Lazuli) a girl that nobody knows much about, she seems to be rather fond of Steven. She hangs around the beach and I assume she doesn't have a very good home life.

So why would we spend so much time making up complicated backstories for everyone just to spare a childs feelings? Well it was all just pretend. I think even Steven knows it, he must know by now, but in our minds at least at the time I thought maybe letting the poor kid believe he was an imortal superhero would be better then letting him know how horrible things really were.
