Did this during writing club a few years back. Not the best quality but I wanted to experiment with something different. Quick explanation: Ichigo is a pilot, Misake was his sister, and Akane was an Angel in human form. Some time I might make this into an Eva/Elfen Lied crossover, if you can see how that would work with Akane being a Diclonius. I don't expect everyone to like it, I just wanted to post some of my older work. Thanks for reading!
Ichigo stared at the floor. Blood ran down his arm and dripped onto the floor through the rip in his uniform. His hair dripped too, but not blood. At least, not human blood. The LCL of his Evangelion's plug still soaked his hair, and remained in his lungs. A picture flashed in his memory. Akane. The Angel. He had suspected before, but he hadn't cared. And now… Too late. His Evangelion was destroyed, Misake was dead, and here Ichigo sat, unable to think of anything except that dark, emotionless face. He hated himself.
Then blood loss claimed Ichigo's mind and he fell into unconsciousness. He found himself in a dark cave. He inhaled deeply. The comforting scent of LCL met his senses, but it was different than that in his Eva. It smelled like Akane. Ichigo walked slowly down the length of the cave, lightly dragging his fingers across the wall. The sound of a haunting song met his ears. He found Akane at the piano, the Angel in her human form. A sparkling dress covered her slim frame. It reminded Ichigo of dragon scales. She finished the last notes and turned to him, her red eyes burning deep into his.
"Why?" Ichigo choked out the words at last. "Why did you do this? I tried to make them treat you like a human instead of some medical experiment, and this is how you repay me?" The Angel's eyes never left his as she answered. "You know why. Our kinds can never coexist. No matter my feelings, I did what I had to do. All except killing you." She turned her eyes away. "I just couldn't do that." Ichigo fell to his knees, tears squeezing out through closely shut eyelids. He felt as if he was being torn apart by a storm, like he was still fighting. Still warring. Still dying.
He woke up in a hospital bed, still feeling weak from the blood loss. Beside him, the commander sat on a stool, watching. "So you're awake." Ichigo turned away. "I don't want to talk." The commander gently touched his bandaged shoulder. "It was not your fault. She is not human, do not feel as if you failed somehow." Ichigo buried his head into his hospital pillow. "No, I did fail. And you are wrong. Akane was… is… human. It was not her fault your stupid scientists put that thing in her." The commander tried to talk with him more, but finally she left when Ichigo would not respond.
Three days passed. Life went on, and Ichigo was discharged from the NERV hospital. He had appointments with a psychologist, who kept telling him not to blame himself. But Ichigo knew better. Finally, he could take it no more. He took a set of clothes, Misake's necklace, and some money. And the fragment of his dead Eva's core. The only thing he had left to remind him…
But that was not true. As Ichigo walked down the road Akane had taken after she had left him, after the fight, he remembered. He remembered all the summer days he and Misake had shared. He remembered his Eva sacrificing itself to save him. He remembered the little kindnesses he had shown the poor, abused medical experiment until finally the first smile had broken on her face. And most of all her remembered the softening in Akane's eyes as the wildness of the Angel's influence left her, and she left him alive.
"I will save you, Akane." The boy continued down the lone path. "I will save you."
