Toothless's pov

I watched as my human, Hiccup, examined my saddle. In our last flight we had crashed and I had damaged it.

"Well… looks like we broke a couple of connecting rods this time Tooth'. I'm going to have to go down the forge to fix this."

I snorted my approval to and licked his hand in thanks. "Hey! Tooth'! Stop that!" he shouted. "I'm going to leave you here, okay? Remember the last time you went to the forge?" I couldn't help but remember, the loud smelly Human there called Goober was so annoyed when I flicked my tail and knocked down all of his tools and then started chewing on one of them. "What can I say? It smelled like fish oil." I said to hiccup. My human just sighed and shook his head. I knew he couldn't understand what is was saying but I still wanted to speak to him. For some reason the lilting, growling tones of Dragonese soothed him. "Bye Toothless." he said picking up my saddle and heading toward the town. I sighed with relief "I thought he would never leave!". I had something very important to do but I couldn't do it while Hiccup was around. I looked around to see if there were any other humans or dragons nearby, then ducked into the small barn behind Hiccup's house.

I closed the door behind me with my tail. I took a deep breath steeling my nerves for what I would do next. I tucked my tail under my body to stop it from slipping away. My tail had been growing back, if I left it alone I would be in the air on my own in a month or two, but if it grew back they would take me away, force me to leave Hiccup. I couldn't let them do that, I needed him. He was my brother. Here I had a purpose, back home was a bad omen they just wanted to die or disappear. I took a deep breath and bit down on the healing flesh. I felt my teeth puncture the skin, crying out in pain as I ripped it off. I stopped and gasped with the pain, I could see my own black blood seeping out of the wound. I ripped at it again and again crying out each time. Eventually after what seemed like a lifetime, I stopped stars dancing in front of my eyes. There was still some left but I was too weak to rip it off. I had waited too long since the last time I did this.

Hiccups pov

I was heading up the hill to my home, I had finished the repairs on the saddle and even done a few upgrades. It had gone well and faster than I expected. Toothless would be happy, it was early enough we could still go for a flight. I heard Toothless cry out in pain. I dropped the saddle and ran toward the cry. It had come from the barn behind the house! Was someone trying to hurt Toothless? I drew my knife as I ran toward the barn. I didn't bother to check my speed for an instant and just opened the door by hitting it with my shoulder. When I saw what was going on inside I gasped. Toothless was lying in a pool of his own blood. The side of his tail that was missing was bleeding heavily and it looked like it had been savaged by a dragon. Toothless made a pained moan and raised his head to look at me. I could see pieces of his own flesh hanging form his mouth and his muzzle was covered in his blood. "Toothless, why?" I said starting to feel tears leak from my eyes. He moaned again and let his head fall to the ground as if he was too weak to raise it again. I ran out of the barn and into the house to grab our First Aid kit. I ran back as quickly as I could. Toothless eyes were closed and his breathing was slow and ragged. I shook him "TOOTHLESS WAKE UP!" I shouted " I'm not going to lose you!"
