As Watari walked onstage, the various representatives from America, China, Japan, France, Germany, Russia, Canada and the United Kingdom calmed down. Watari, clad in a mauve trenchcoat, his face obscured by a wide-brimmed fedora, calmly set the laptop on the table and opened it up, exposing the "L" insignia, already known worldwide for solving some most unusual cases. This one, however, trumped anything L had ever seen before. As he explained it…
"The case before us is remarkable not only due to the incredible magnitude of the victims, but due to the fact that, although the vast majority of these individuals were killed in the most gory and audacious ways, the killer or killers have somehow managed to slip right through the hands of the American government for, oh, around 5 years." At this the other G8 representatives stared at the American representatives reproachfully.
"Recently, however, this has been made an international issue when we found similar killings across the world. These reproductions obviously lack the finesse of the original, and so I am able to say that I am 60% sure that the one killer that has not been apprehended, that somehow has never been located, is in America." At this, there was some ruckus. 60% didn't seem like much, but the G8 veterans knew that L's 60% was anyone else's 100%.
"As the CIA, FBI, and many private investigators have already had their hand at this case, I believe it is appropriate to now give me full access to American resources. With this help, I am 80% sure the killer will be found within a month."
There was some deliberation among the American ambassadors until they reached a conclusion: This was L's case now. The world's Number 1 superpower was placing their trust in the hands of someone they'd never seen. Only time would tell if this had been the right choice.
