"If Bo isn't here, I'll just go. Could you…get her to call, or something?"
Lauren knew it had been a mistake to show up without calling but she missed Bo and she wanted to surprise her. Not with anything, just a visit. Their schedules hadn't exactly matched up recently and that was hard.
"You can stay, if you like. She's at the store or something. Apparently we needed more milk." Kenzi gestured to their couch and went as if to go back up to her room. Lauren stopped her, taking hold of her wrist. Kenzi tried to shake her off but she held firm.
"Why do you hate me so much? Why can't you bear to sit in the same room as me?" Lauren wasn't quite sure why she started to cry. She just…hated to be disliked. And the fact that Kenzi hated her made things with Bo 100 times more complicated than they already were.
"Well, I'll start with the fact that you spy-banged my best friend. I mean, what kind of freak does that?"
"The kind who is in fear of her livelihood being ripped away. I understand that that is no excuse, but Bo has forgiven me for that. Why can't you?"
"Secondly, you work for the Ash and he's really kinda shady, you know. Like, I don't trust him so I sure as hell won't trust the people who work for him." Kenzi ignored Lauren's question, like she normally ignored interaction with the doctor. Why couldn't she just be left alone?
"You may be right not to trust the Ash but you should trust that I work for the best interests of Bo and the rest of the Light."
"And finally, I am Bo's human and now I barely see her anymore. At least when she was with Dyson, she still spent time with me. Now I might as well not be here…"
Kenzi finally loosened Lauren's grip and slipped free. She stalked off towards her room.
"You want to know why I hate you? When you're not around, I can pretend I fit in with Bo and Hale and Dyson. But when you are, it's a constant reminder that we are only human, Lauren. And I'm scared that you'll get tied up with Bo and forget. Eventually, one day, the tide will turn and we…they won't want us anymore."
"Kenzi…Bo will never let you go. Regardless of whether I am here or not."
"But still. My whole life, I've been an 'only'. And for once, I kind of felt like I fitted in. And then you came along, and I'm only human again. Just plain ol' Kenzi."
Lauren walked over to where the young girl was standing. Gently, she pulled Kenzi into her arms.
"Kenzi, you will never, ever be 'only human', not to Bo, not to anyone."
Lauren couldn't be sure, but she thought she heard a muffled 'thanks'.
