Ch 1 How In The World
Squinting at the words on her computer, Ellie sighed and leaned back in her chair, rubbing her stinging eyes. So much nonsense. She should probably switch to doing her stories again instead of reading others. Granted, some were decent and more were good, others were just so, so terrible. Hitting a few keys, Word came up and presented her half-done story. Her editor was waiting on the next few chapters to be sent and the deadline was in a few days.
The first chapter of five wasn't even completed yet.
With an irritated noise, Ellie switch back to the internet page with the amateur writing site and changed it to her favourite fanfiction site. If she was going to procrastinate, she was going to enjoy it.
As always, time slipped away as morning turned into afternoon and Ellie sat back again. Although the stories were enjoyable, her own was nagging at the back of her brain. With a frustrated noise and a tap of her fingers, Word was back on the screen and her story mocking her. Her head hit the desk with a groan. How was she going to get back on track? Tea. That always helped her think.
Sometimes.
Rolling back her chair, Ellie went through her cottage to the modern kitchen she had installed last year. Setting the kettle on a flame, she leaned against the counter and stared out the window. It was raining, again. But such was the curse of Washington and it didn't bother her one bit, gave her more excuses for more tea and lit fireplaces than she could get in California. Lost in her thoughts, the shriek of the kettle made her jump. Swiftly making her teacup with practiced ease, she made her way back to her office den. Approaching the double door entry, Ellie paused. Something was different, the look and feel of the room was off. Taking another step to stand in the doorway, she peered around inside.
The curtains hadn't been pushed back so it was darker, but that wasn't all, her lamp was out. A soft meow came from in the room and Ellie relaxed slightly, one of the cats probably unplugged the lamp again. Teacup in one hand, she traced her way to the nearest window and threw back the curtains to let in the dim natural light. A sigh of relief came out and she turned around, intending to search for her cat. Instead, she froze at the scene before her. What in the name of all that is holy…were there men on her rug? Ellie couldn't quite make out their features other than long hair and bulky clothes.
Edging around her study, she kept her eyes on the men wondering if she was hallucinating or not, and carefully made her way to the lamp. Setting the cup on the desk, Ellie crouched down and felt around for the cord. Her hand made contact and felt its way up the cord to the wall. It was plugged in. which meant the light bulb went out or a circuit broke in the room. Still stooped, she fished out her phone and fumbled with it for a moment to turn on the flashlight. Brilliant light struck the room and illuminated the pile of bodies on her rug and Ellie sucked in a breath.
There was no way. She had to be dreaming.
Going to her knees, Ellie crawled forward with one hand and the other shining her phones light on the men. It was impossible. Dirt and blood covered their skin, but it did nothing to hide their features. There was three of them and they looked so, so similar to the movie versions of Thorin, Fili, and Kili. She looked up at her ceiling, expecting to see a worm hole or some sort of light show above her even though the only light was from her phone. Making the tea had only taken five, seven minutes tops, to make so how in the world were there people in her home without a sound?
She needed reinforcements. Other than her animals.
Quietly and carefully, Ellie crawled out of the room without taking her eyes off the men and slid the French doors shut to her office. Who the hell was she supposed to contact? The police was a logical choice, but she really didn't want to get involved with an investigation and it wasn't like they had done anything. Yet. Besides, how was she supposed to explain where they came from when she hadn't figured it out? Turning the flashlight off on the phone, Ellie stared at the device. There weren't a lot of people in her life, and only a few nearby. Biting her lip, only one person crossed her mind that would be of any help, and that was a wide use of the word.
Bringing up her messages, Ellie found her only friend in Washington and hit the phone icon. It rang for a few times before the line was picked up.
"Hello, you've reached the magical mystical Kat, what do yah need?"
Ellie shook her head to herself and walked away from her office quickly. "Are you able to come over?"
"Oooh, never thought I would get this kind of call from you."
"Shut up, this is serious."
"A question like that can be sometimes."
Resisting the urge to bang her head off the wall, Ellie took a deep breath. "I need your help with something and it's a bit hard to do over the phone."
A snort of laughter came through the line. "I suppose you could use a second set of hands, sometimes it's more difficult to obtain certain by yourself."
"Kat."
"Now that I'm thinking, why didn't you text. We always text. Do you need me to curse someone?"
"…Maybe." Not really a viable option, but if this wasn't her imagination, perhaps the three men could be scared. Her friend had a way of looking through others.
"Give me an hour, have to get a ride after I grab some things." Shuffling was heard after her confirmation and then silence. "Are you in danger?"
"No?"
"That didn't seem affirmative."
"Shut up and get your stuff, I need you as soon as possible."
"Always suggestive, are you sure you don't need something else? I can pick up a guy along the way if you don't want me. Maybe the Uber driver will be cute."
Ellie groaned. Technically, she was no longer in a shortage of men, but not ones that she knew or was going to sleep with as it stood. "Would you just hurry up?"
"Fine, fine, I'll talk to the Uber driver."
The phone call ended with a click before Ellie could retort and she stared at the dim screen bewildered. How in the world had she ended up with such a strange friend? Casting an eye back at her closed door, Ellie wonder what she was supposed to do for an hour. In the quiet of her home, she heard a meow, then a hiss, and a thud with cursing that had her jump in surprise. The cat was still in her study. Shit. Deep voices penetrated the doors and shuffling was heard before a body came through the door, literally. Frozen in place, Ellie watched as the man with dark brown hair shook his head with a groan and climb to his feet, shaking off the glass and wood from his clothes.
"What in the name of Mahal was that for, and where are we?" The man looked up and pinned his brown eyes on Ellie, slowing his actions as he looked her up and down.
"Would you move so we can get out also?" One of the other men was trying to open the door, hitting the broken frame on the brunet.
No answer came and the door shut. Hands came from the broken opening and shove the other man as another stepped out with blond hair, then an older on with grey streaked raven hair. Ellie couldn't move, there was nothing in her life that had prepared her for this situation. Yeah, there were stories on her fanfic sites that had plots like this, but it was all fiction! They had to have gotten here somehow, but since they looked like they came from her favourite movies, it was hard to imagine another scenario.
"Who are you?" The older man demanded since both younger two seemed to be dumbstruck by the sight of her.
"I should be asking that, who are you three?" Ellie was proud her voice didn't shake at her answering demand.
He frowned and looked around them, his forehead furrowing in confusion at their surroundings. "I am Thorin Oakenshield, these are my nephews, Fili and Kili. Now your name."
"Ellie." She couldn't help it, her shock at their names was too much.
"Are you some sort of hobbit?"
Laughter bubbled up and spilled from her lips, making the proclaimed Fili and Kili jolt. "A hobbit? Not in the least, though I suppose I kind of live like one according to their description. Are those really your names?"
"Have you heard of us?"
This was impossible, there was no way they were real. She was hallucinating, maybe dreaming. She could've tripped over a cat and hit her head. Those possibilities were a greater chance of being real than three Durin's from Tolkien's best works being alive and real, in her home.
"You could say that…"
The cat that had been in the study with them jumped gracefully through broken door and walked past the three to rub up against Ellie's leg. The one who said he was Thorin stiffened and stared down at her Red Somali cat, glaring at it.
"That thing hissed and scratched me."
Ellie frowned at him then at her oldest cat. "He's never scratched anyone, what did you do to him?"
"Nothing."
"Smaug doesn't attack people or hiss at them."
All three were staring at her in horror, Fili and Kili snapping out of their trance at the proclaimed name. But all three had an angry shadow cast over their faces. It made Ellie pick up her cat and take a step back.
"What did you name that thing?"
"This is a cat, c-a-t, and I named him Smaug."
A loud knock came from her front door and Smaug jumped from her arms and ran from the room. Ellie looked in the direction of the knock, wondering if it was Kat since not much time had passed. Perhaps she decided not to take as long. She wasn't sure what to do, the door was out of sight from where they stood. Another meow came from her kitchen and out walked her Russian Blue followed by a brown tabby.
"You have more…cats?"
"Yes, this is Gandalf the Gray and Radagast the Brown."
The horror grew on their faces. "You turned wizards into cats?"
"Um, no." This wasn't good, they were acting like they truly were the three characters from Middle Earth. Slowly, she edged her way to the front door as another knock echoed down her hallway. With them distracted for a moment, Ellie ran to the front door as the one who looked like Kili tore off towards the cat named Gandalf. She didn't spare him another though as she rushed to the door and ripped it open. Kat turned to her, blinking at the rain and holding a bag under one arm with a bunny in the other along with her walking stick.
"Hi! You didn't sound right so I rushed right over. Found Bilbo here under one of the bushes and… who is that?"
Feet were thumping quickly towards them and Ellie braced herself for more than one assault. Thankfully, nothing came. Peering behind her, she saw Thorin breathing heavily and staring at the bunny in Kat's arm.
"Did you say Bilbo? You made him a rabbit?"
"I didn't change anyone into anything." Desperation was clear in her voice and when Ellie faced Kat again, Smaug the cat ran behind her in the hallway with Kili after him a second later.
"Okay, well I'm glad the Uber driver wasn't a looker since you seem to have a handle on that, however…" Kat took a step in and Thorin rose his eyes to her face, disbelief clouding his own. "What are the Sons of Durin doing in your home?"
Please let me know what you all thought. This is meant to be a more humourous story with romance, I hope everyone enjoyed it.
