Waiting
Just a quick one-shot I decided to write about being a teen in the time of mutants. The character this is about could be anyone really, but it's meant to be something like the experience of one of my OCs (in the X-men evo fic I have yet to upload :P ) It was written on the spur of the moment, hence isn't very good, but tell me what you think.
Toss and turn, every night. Drawing closer or not at all. People look at you like you could suddenly sprout fangs: because you could. Your parents wonder if they'll still love you if you grow fur: because you could. Human or mutant, human or mutant. All your classmates are haunted too, by this sudden doubt. Who are you? What are you? Human? Mutant? What will you look like? Blue fur? Green skin? Purple scales? Who, or what, are your friends? Human? Mutant? Will you accept them, if you end up on different sides? Will they accept you?
Will you live to see fifteen? Will they?
And the thing is, you don't know which you want. Human is safer, rest assured. But what of the adventure? Part of you yearns to leave it all behind, to cut all your ties, and if you were a mutant, you'd have no other choice. Right?
But what of those you love? They'd still care for you if you were human. But if you were a mutant, you could protect them. As a human you're just a kid. As a mutant, you could be a saviour.
Waiting, waiting for your time to come. As you grow older it seems your wishes are granted: you're still human. But what of your secret desire? Is it bigger? Does it mean more to you? As your friends change and take their sides, you stay the same. Neutral. Undefined. You neither hate nor love either.
One day, your life takes a turn for the better. Your parents are on better terms with you, your grades are improving, your friends are good (the ones who didn't turn out to be mutants), and your life is generally good. You decide you like being human more than you thought. You go to bed that night, happy to have your family and friends, and be able to go to normal school.
And in the morning, you wake up bright blue.
R&R please!
