He hadn't been home for months.
Chichi sat alone every day as Goku trained. She tapped her fingers on the dining room table for hours every day. She began to acquire blisters, then callouses.
"Chichi…" she whispered her own name, "How was your day?" She meekly inquired. She rubbed the tip if her index finger on the mahogany. She sighed and once again counted the dark lines in the wood.

There was a knock at the door. Chichi whipped her head around. Her untied hair waved back and forth against the air. She quickly got up and turned on the lights.
Today was the day.
She opened the creaky wooden door and he was standing there with his same smile.
"Hello, Chichi!" he beamed. He was like a ray of sunshine.
Chichi smiled, "Goku," she said with tears in her eyes. She grabbed him and hugged him tightly. He grabbed her back. For as strong as he was, he was always to gentle.
He pulled away his body, but still held his hands on her arms. He looked at her pale face and asked, "What's for dinner?"
Oh, of course. Food.
"I didn't make any yet," Chichi replied, "I'm going to start now." She pulled away completely from her husband and walked towards the kitchen. She pulled out some cherry tomatoes from the refrigerator and popped one in her mouth. It was sour, then sweet.
Chichi took out a knife from the drawer and began slicing the tomatoes in half. She stopped for a moment, realizing that she hadn't tied up her hair; how informal!
Her socks made no sound against the floor. She dragged her feet towards the kitchen table Goku was patiently waiting at. She grabbed a hair-tie and looked at Goku: his eyes were shut and he was leaning back in the chair. Chichi gave out a sigh, "Where's Gohan?"
Goku's eyes fluttered open and he responded, "He's over at Capsule Corp. helping Bulma with something-or-other… what was it again?" He put his hand on his chin and looked up towards the ceiling, deep in thought.
Chichi just turned back around to get back to cooking.
"Actually," Goku continued, "I think she needed to put some parts to her new machine in some high places, and Vegeta wouldn't help."
"Oh?" Chichi picked up the knife again, "What is her new invention?"
Goku huffed in confusion, "I'm not sure; I think she said it was some kind of…"
Chichi stopped listening to whatever Goku was rambling on about. She kept her grip on the knife and took some tomato halves into her hand. She walked over to Goku. She interrupted his sentence when she held out the fruit and said "Try some."
"Oh, thank you!" Goku chuckled, "These were always some of my favorite—"
He stopped.
He stopped with his mouth full of food.
He looked down at his chest, seeing blood trickling down. His neck was in so much searing pain that it was numb. He spit up the tomatoes as blood dribbled out of his mouth. He fell over from the huge blood loss and saw Chichi standing over him. She had a tomato in one hand and a bloody knife in the other.
She leaned down towards him and looked into his eyes. Goku coughed up blood and it spattered onto Chichi's translucently pale face. She gave him a soft smile. Goku's vision faded. This was something even a saiyan couldn't recover from.
Chichi saw her husband tremble. He looked at her with sadness and pain. Then, his eyes became dull. He let out a final, gurgling breath. Then, there was no more sound.
Chichi leaned to Goku's face and kissed his cheek where blood had trickled down. She came back up, her lips were wet and a dark, scarlet color.
"I love you," she whispered to the cold body, smiling.
