mellon- friend

"What do Elves call their friends who live by the sea?" "Watermellons." -the Internet

Olwion- means "son of Olwë" (OC)

It was quite understandable.

No one had ever imagined that an Elf would kill another Elf, not in Aman- and the concept of a whole army of Elves bent on murder of their brethren was unthinkable.

Therefore it was perfectly understandable that Olwion Prince of the Teleri would be shocked and terrified almost beyond rational thought, and that not even his father's order to ride to Valmar to beseech the Valar for aid could shake him out of his stupor.

It was absolutely natural- though a waste of precious time- that, when he arrived in the Ring of Doom where the Valar were mourning the Two Trees, he would burst into tears and be unable to get words out for a full five minutes.

"They... k... they killed..."

"What, child? Who killed whom?"

Yet despite Olwion's great emotional stress and everyone's silent acknowledgement that they probably would have done the same, none of the Teleri- not even those who eventually forgave the Kinslaying- would ever quite forgive the fatal delay caused by the fact that when Olwion was finally able to speak, and Manwë was desperately imploring of him to tell them what had befallen, the first words out of the mouth of the heir to the High Kingship of the Teleri were,

"They killed my watermellons!"

(Only Yavanna was happy, because for a fleeting instant she thought she had found a kindred spirit. Unfortunately, after reassuring an incoherent Olwion of the ability of plants to regrow under starlight and making eager plants for night-growing watermelons for a full ten minutes only to realize that Olwion pronounced the word with two l's, Yavanna felt like the hugest idiot that had ever walked Arda, and she was unable to meet the eyes of her brethren for a full Age.)
