THE GIVER
2
Jonas and Gabriel went to the city. It was a beautiful place compared to Jonas' community.
He walked to the nearest house, and rang the doorbell. The woman who opened it looked at him for a moment and then rushed him into the house (wile muttering "This is one of the few times I wish that we had climate control").
Jonas looked at her and said, "You know about climate control?"
She looked at him strangely. "Of course, every sameness protester knows about climate control."
"There are sameness protesters?"
"Um… yeah. Where have you been?"
"Unfortunately in sameness."
The woman suddenly looked very frightened.
"YOU MUST LEAVE!!"
"What?! Why?!"
"If they find you here, I will be in BIG trouble!"
"But I thought you were a sameness protester!"
"I am, but all we have accomplished so far is to keep sameness out of my small town. And the only way we could do that was to give up…" Her voice faded away.
"Your eyes! Oh no!"
"What?! I know that they are different than most of the people in my community's eyes, but your eyes are the same color as mine."
"It's worse than I thought, YOU MUST LEAVE!"
"Tell me why!"
"You're a receiver aren't you?"
"How did you know?"
"Only the pale eyed people have the capability to see and hear beyond. Also, you know what color is."
"Why can't I stay?"
"Two people from one community ran away, not very long ago, one was the new receiver who had taken in a years worth of memories. The town is in chaos. We have been given strict order NOT to take in either one of them. I can't believe that they won't even let us welcome them, I mean they are family."
"What did you say? Did you say that those people are related to you?"
"Yes. Their names are Jonas and Gabriel. They were my sons. The mayor made me give both of them up so the communities wouldn't make us go to sameness."
"Did you say they were your sons? You mean that you are their mother?"
"Yes."
"Well, do you want to see Gabriel?"
"Gabriel?! You have Gabriel?!"
"Yes, just a second." Jonas untied Gabriel from his waist.
"Here you go."
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What is your name again?"
"Oh, sorry I haven't introduced myself! My name is Jonas."
The woman was shocked. Then when she got out of shock, she told Jonas the whole story.
"The pale eyed children come from this town so that the community will have possible receivers. We pride ourselves on our smart children in this town"
