Chapter 1

It seemed as though she could taste summer air changing into its cool autumn mist. Luna Lovegood lay in the ankle high grass on the hill where her large tower like house resides. Thoughts of the year to come at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry entered her relaxed state of being. She missed her friends of course. Over the summer she had spent her time in her room painting her ceiling with images of those close to her. This of course had been quite a task for Luna, who often slipped and fell resulting in paint dirtying her clothing. This thought passed in her mind as she looked down at her blouse to see a very noticeable black line across her stomach, but for some reason she could not explain, she liked it.

"This top was rather boring before I…" she stopped speaking realizing she was still alone. She looked back down at her formally clean white blouse and decided to elaborate on her mistake by painting it into a design.

Later that night Luna ventured to the bottom floor of her house to find a note with recognizable chicken scratch that said,

Luna,

Work forbids me from being with you on your last dinner of the summer. I apologize with the utmost authenticity, but will be sure to send you and owl with a letter and the latest issue of the Quibbler

Love,
Dad

Luna sighed with discontent but knew in her soul that he had no other options.

Regardless of her father's absences, Luna was determined to carry on dinner conversation with something, even if it could not speak. Luna walked into her kitchen to make dinner and managed to carry on a conversation with a lemon for an hour or so. After she had eaten, she carried the lemon up stairs to her bedroom to pack him into her trunk (the conversation they had was very interesting and Luna intended to continue one night at Hogwarts). She took this chance to check that she had packed all she needed. She checked her list of textbooks and essential items. She checked that she had her school robes all packed and ran a finger over her ear to ensure that her want still resided there. She closed her trunk and lay in her bed as her eyes closed and she went to bed.

Luna awoke the next morning with a tired yawn and rolled out of her four-poster bed. As she walked to the one and only bathroom in the house and recapped a rather odd dream she was having in which she had only been able to walk on her hands and was having a rather tough time casting any spells. Inspired by her dream, still half asleep, Luna attempted to make her bed using a spell casted with a wand held between her toes. Too her great surprise it worked. Perhaps having all of her shoes stolen by nargals, was a blessing in disguise. While she was pondering this, Luna had forgotten her balance and fell over.

After Luna was dressed she left her tower like home with her trunk in hand, and began her walk to the Weaslys who she figured would lend her their fireplace so that she could use the floo network to get to the platform 9 ¾.
