"What can I say about Laurence Kutner? I could stand here and list all the qualities that made him a good man, a great doctor. But then I would just be repeating what you're already thinking and that would be pointless. Or I could tell you what made him an idiot. He was probably the biggest idiot I have ever met.
"Kutner had a gift for medicine, despite his accidents, I have seen in very few doctors and he wasted it. He was a waste. He could have gone far with his talent. Yet, Kutner refused to grasp it and instead he let everything go.
"No one was there to stop him. No one saw the signs. No one took the time to recognize that he was more miserable than the next person. No one noticed anything. No one wanted to notice anything was wrong.
"One word, one tiny gesture and none of us would be here today. No of us would be mourning a man who didn't think he would be missed.
"He was wrong. He will be missed. His family, his friends, the hospital… we will miss him.
"I don't know what Kutner was thinking. Nobody will know. Nobody will know what pushed him over the edge. He didn't even leave a note explaining why he did this. Why did he do it…
"This is not my fault. Kutner didn't give me any clues he was capable of taking his own life. He didn't tell me anything. It's NOT my fault.
"I don't know if there is someone to fault. Maybe it's no one fault. Maybe it's everyone's fault. We will never know. I hate not knowing."
