"And the District Five Female Tribute is...Rye Beren!" My heart stopped as the crowd parted away from me, like I was an plague on their family. I looked around wildly looking for my family and spotted both my sisters. They avoided my gaze.
I felt a sharp tugged on my arm to see two Peace Keepers pulling me towards the stage. They wouldn't look at me either. I stumbled onto the stage, almost tripping the way they threw me on. I could practically hear the Capitol laughing in my ears.
"Oh, how lovely! The honor of being a tribute. Exquisite isn't it? Now my dear...Rye was it? How old are you?" The Capitol Representative said, her voice like a dying mouse. Her golden eyebrows glimmered in the hot sunlight.
"I'm...I'm 15." I choked out. But then I added, "Almost 16." Just so I didn't sound to young. The older I was, the more my chances increased. Look at me, already thinking about my chances.
"Beautiful! Such a lovely young woman we have in our misted! Now for our male tribute!" I stood next to her as she rumbled on. She plucked the name of Buckley Sonderson, a simple farmer boy. I had seen him in school sometimes, but never really took noticed since he was a grade below me, not that he came in much. Spent most of his time harvesting.
"Now have an applause for our District Five Tributes of the 14th Annual Hunger Games!" No one clapped, they would probably edit that before showing the Capitol. We were brought back to the City Hall in a solid black car. It was funny, I had only ever seen a car but five times, and now I was actually sitting in one. In City Hall, they sat me alone in a sealed room. An hour for visitors they told me, no one came.
A whistle blew loudly in my ears as I boarded a Capitol train. It was the most luxurious thing I had ever seen, not that I really cared. In a couple of weeks, I would be dead.
