"Wait! No, I'm sorry, please don't do this!"
Andrew walked on, planning on leaving. It had been 2 happy, glorious years, and that all shattered in the last two days.
"Please, Andrew, just listen to me!"
"Claudine, what is there to listen to?" Andrew said, turning around. "Now I know who you really love. Just….let me go."
Claudine had grabbed Andrew's arm, intending to pull him towards her. Andrew's anger only grew when she did not heed his order. Summoning his strength, he caused water moisture in the air to slap her arm.
As he saw the pained look on her face, memories flashed before Andrew's eyes—the dance they shared, that magical night at the beach under the moon, their quest—but he shook that feeling out of his head. I can't afford to think like this. I need to leave. Andrew continued to walk, and saw her run back, back to the cabins, but more importantly, away from him. As Andrew continued to walk to the camp border, he thought about what had happened….
The scene that laid before Andrew a mere two days ago had caused him to go near insanity with grief. Claudine was kissing one of the veteran campers, someone in college, in the woods behind the cabins. Before they could see him, he ran away, tears streaming down. The race had begun to hurry up and leave—leave his memories, all of his special times, all of that behind. Andrew had to get out.
To think that maybe, just maybe, Andrew had someone, someone he could trust, someone he could love, someone who loved him—was that too much to ask? Andrew never had a good life. He didn't have anyone. The only home he had was Camp Halfblood, and with the stains that was on this valley, the stains of a heartbreak, he couldn't stay. Andrew knew he had to get away.
Sure monsters would chase after him. But perhaps slaying beast after beast would help him forget. Somehow, though, he knew he'd probably never forget. Andrew was now certain he'd live life as a lone wolf—the ugly puppy in the litter that no one wanted. As he neared the camp's border, all he could think of was the pain and happiness that Claudine had brought him. Perhaps this was the wrong choice….no. Andrew knew he couldn't ever trust her again. He knew from life on the streets that trust was a fragile thing. Andrew only gave people one chance at his.
Now standing next the pine, next to Peleus, next to the Golden Fleece, Andrew was reminded of another person that cared about him. Percy. His brother, the one who reminded him that he had family. Percy and Annabeth were still together, this he knew, but Andrew felt more like a third wheel around them. He knew that they loved each other, and since he saw Claudine in the woods, he was jealous of their relationship. Andrew had a harder life. Why won't love give him even a chance, a hope to help him live? Andrew knew that if he stayed, he would end up damaging Percy's relationship with Annabeth. He loved them both too much to do such a thing. For their own good, He had to leave.
As he stepped down the hill, Andrew turned back to look at the valley one last time. The valley that held cherished memories, and also ones of regret and now torture.
"Goodbye, Claudine…..I hope you're happy." Andrew said, in a bitter tone. "Because the cost of your happiness was my heart."
