Lightning lit up the sky outside the Burrow one dark rainy night. George didn't mind it all. He had been sleeping soundly, dreaming of jumping in the muddy puddles that would be there come morning and the pranks he could pull on Percy. He smiled in his sleep but then he felt a small hand shoving him awake.
"Five more minutes, Mum," he complained, pushing the hand off him but it only returned.
"George, wake up," Fred said, pushing his brother awake.
"Fred?" George asked, his eyes still closed. "You better have a good reason for waking me up."
There was a pause and George opened one eye, wondering if Fred had gone back to his own bed. Instead, the boy was standing next to his head and biting his lip, looking very unsure of what to say. Eventually he said, "Can't sleep."
"Why not?" George asked. The sound of the rain hitting the window grabbed George's attention and he smiled. "Scared of the storm?"
Fred began to sputter. "No! Whatever gave you that idea?" he said indignantly.
At that moment, another bright flash lit up the room and Fred dove to the floor.
"Fred?" George asked as he peered over the edge of his bed.
Fred was there on the floor with his blanket drawn over his head. "I'm not scared of the storm. I'm scared of the lightning," he admitted, peeking his head from underneath. "It's too bright and it looks like claws coming from the sky."
George looked to the window and then back to his brother. "Come here," he said, making room his bed for his twin. Fred gave him a small smile as he crawled in next to his brother and George brought him close. "I'll protect you, Freddie, don't you worry."
