A Price for Immortality

After I had to leave, for a long time I didn't see the point anymore.

You came and left equally suddenly; the sixteen years I spent with you seem like hardly a day in my immortal existence. I will always look back to those times and think of them as the highlights of my life.

On that hot beach at midnight with our friends, taking pictures and sharing cigarettes, thinking things would be the same forever.

On our heists in the streets, trying to act tough like we were the gangsters we were trying to be. No gunshots would stop us, because we were invincible!

The mere thought of it now makes me laugh aloud. We were so young back then. And free. We had no cares for the future whatsoever.

When I saw you drifting towards Yi-Che… well, I knew it was time to leave. I didn't want to get in your way. And after your brother's death and my failed attempt to save him, I was ashamed.

I had been like a parent to you - a guardian - and I knew you would never see me as anything else. I took you in as a child and watched you grow up, teaching you how to shoot a gun, fistfight and smoke.

But I stayed forever twenty-one.

And you outgrew me.

Now I wander the streets in the rain at night, and wonder if there will ever be any point again.
