"OUCH!"

Mai scowled at him, dabbing at the cut under his eye with an antiseptic-soaked cotton ball. "Hold still, or this is going in your eye and then that'll really hurt," she growled irritably, ignoring the way the other blonde flinched.

"Geez, Mai. You're about to kill me," Jounouchi retorted sullenly, letting out a strangled hiss when she pushed too hard on the injury and gripping the edge of the chair with enough strength to possibly break it.

"Well I certainly hope I do!" she snapped, glaring at him as she nearly threw the now pink cotton ball down on the table. The cut was bleeding sluggishly and didn't appear to need stitches, she noted absently. "Maybe then you wouldn't get into some pointless fight! This is the fifth time in a month I've had to do this!"

"I'll admit it, the first four were because I picked them first. I was bored," amended Jounouchi grimly. "I get it. But this time, I didn't start it. I had to fight."

"Right," she scoffed unsympathetically.

Jounouchi suddenly whirled around in the chair to face her, brown eyes blazing. "It isn't necessarily a pointless fight when some jerk face gets it into his head that he can threaten someone near and dear to me!" he said hotly.

Mai paused. "Who?"

The fire that had lit Jounouchi's eyes seconds ago vanished immediately and an uncomfortable expression made its way onto his face. "Never mind," he muttered, reaching for the first aid kit. "I can get these. I'll be dead before you get done with them."

"Was it Shizuka?" she asked quietly, ignoring the jibe and watching Jounouchi tend to a scrape on his arm. When he pointedly continued to look away from her, Mai frowned. "I can believe that you got into a fight because of your sister, but…"

Abruptly she stopped talking, because then she recognized the flustered embarrassment that was gracing the other's features and she understood then why he'd felt the need to fight.

…Mai, you're an idiot.

Jounouchi blinked when Mai leaned over and tilted his chin to bare the uninjured side of his face to her. The confused expression melted into a half-incredulous, half-embarrassed one when she kissed him on the cheek. "What was that for?" he asked in disbelief, lifting a hand to his cheek.

"I hear they're supposed to make you feel better," said Mai dismissively, unable to stop the color from rising to her face as she took back the cotton ball and dabbed at Jounouchi's arm. This time, she was much more gentle about it.

The other blonde (whose face had gone beet red the moment she'd kissed him) seemed to mull over this latest development before he grinned. "Mai, I think my lip needs a kiss, too."

"…You did not seriously just try to use that old line on me."

"Worth a shot," he replied cheekily, sensing that he was forgiven.
