(Coulson/May)
Any Danger
"Don't lie to me, Coulson."
Coulson looked meekly over at her. He'd never had much luck lying to her before; that's why she was his second-in-command. He shrugged. "Have to on this one."
May glared at him.
"Trust me," he told her. He reached for the paperweight on his desk and lifted it, fiddling with it.
May's glare didn't waver.
A sigh. "Look. You'll be the first to know if we're in any danger."
No response.
"That's the best I can do. Fury will kill me if I-"
"So, Fury is involved," May said.
Coulson sighed. "He'll have my head if he knows you know that much." A glint in the corner of May's eyes made him shiver. Her next words did, too.
"I can do worse. So, what's it going to be?"
"You mean, am I more afraid of you or Fury?"
A steady gaze, challenging, and a half smirk.
Coulson stopped fiddling with the paperweight, his eyes widening very slightly. "I'll… uh. I'll get back to you on that one."
"I'll be waiting," she told him, turning and slipping out of his office like a ghost.
After another few seconds, Coulson set the paperweight down on his desk and stared at it. "Crap," he muttered. "Fury's going to kill me for this."
fin.
