Mirrors
A.N: This is one of my favourite songs, and I have thought about writing more fanfiction. Recently I've been re-watching episodes of Teen Titans and I realized that there are so many behind the scenes opportunities to write about. So here is a scene set after the talk between Robin and Starfire in Apprentice Part 2, because I'm sure Robin dwelled in these type of thoughts when he looked back on what he had done. Based on the song Mirrors by Jhene Aiko. Normal POV; drabble. Rated T for safety.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of Jhene's songs, nor do I own Teen Titans.
But then the night takes over,
And you are nowhere to be found...
He couldn't sleep.
Sighing, Robin left his bed and padded into his bathroom, rubbing his eyes wearily. Turning on the light, he walked towards the sink and splashed water on his face, then looked up at his reflection in the mirror.
Robin usually took pride in who he was. Although he felt he carried a lot on his shoulders, he was proud to be who he was; proud to be the prodigal son of Batman; proud to be the leader of the Teen Titans.
Today however, was not one of those days.
When Robin stared back into those startlingly blue eyes of his, he could only see Slade. He could remember the ways he struck down his team, his family. He could remember Starfire's agonized resolution that had almost broken him: "I cannot live in a world where we must fight. If you are truly evil, go ahead, do what you must." Her words echoed in his head and he clutched it, seemingly in pain. His eyes glittered with tears and he slammed a fist into the mirror, cracking it. He watched the blood on the mirror slide onto the sink counter top with an agonized face.
Your face in broken pieces…
Don't you look down.
His friends had watched him carefully once they had returned to the tower, and although they were all relieved to see him back on their side, he felt like they were judging him still, like they didn't trust him any more.
Truthfully, he didn't trust himself.
Robin stared at his face in the cracks in the mirror and wondered how he could've have gotten to where he had. Even though he had amended his mistake, he hated himself for making it in the first place - his friends had warned him of his stupid obsession with Slade!
But Robin didn't listen. Cocky and headstrong, he believed he was doing the best for his team. Instead, he partook in a journey that almost ruined him, mentally and emotionally… again.
He scrubbed his eyes fiercely with his fist, sighing. Night was the only time he allowed himself to be truly vulnerable, the only time he let himself be Dick Grayson again. He loved being able to feel normal but hated the barrage of negativity that came with it. Too many memories dwelt within his mind when he was like this, and it pained him that he was not strong enough to stop it.
Robin turned and left his bathroom, switching off the light as he did so. He went to climb back into his bed with slow steps, unable to move above a crawl.
His head turned sharply, though, when he heard the knock at the door.
"Robin?"
And there we go. Feel free to wonder who was actually at his door, and the conversation that may have occurred. I don't know if I'm good at this angst stuff, but it was worth a try! Also, the "again" was referring to his torture at the hands of the Joker and the Two-Face incident.
Reviews are nice.
