Nick woke. There was a warm, soft mass pressed against his back. He smiled. This was one type of morning he loved, waking up with Juliette just lying next to him so peacefully. He sat up. As he stretched quietly, he saw a ring glinting off one finger.
"Good morning, Nick," a female voice said as a hand landed lightly on his shoulder.
But while the voice was familiar, Nick having heard it often, the speaker occasionally plaguing his dreams, it was not Juliette. He turned, and came face to face with a certain blonde Hexenbiest who he'd promised himself he was going to kill. It was Adalind Schade. He saw a matching ring on her other finger.
"Adalind?"
He got out of bed, backing away.
"Where's Juliette? Why are…"
The sound of a baby crying interrupted him. Adalind stood up and walked towards the door. As she walked by him, Nick noticed that Adalind's stomach was slightly swollen. He ran his fingers through his hair. He felt like he was about to wake up drenched in a cold sweat. He pinched himself so that he would wake up. Nothing happened. Adalind came in, carrying a baby girl.
"Nick, what's going on with you this morning?"
"I don't know, Adalind. What year is it?"
"What?"
"What year is it, Adalind?"
"2020. Why do you ask?"
"No, it's 2015."
"It's 2020, Nick," the Hexenbiest replied, "What's going on with you?"
"Where's Juliette?"
"She died five years ago."
"What happened?"
"Drunk driver. A shard of glass from the windshield went through her skull. She died instantly."
"I don't understand. The last thing I remember before waking up here was going to bed with Juliette. Tell me about the five years I seem to be missing."
"Well, after Juliette died, you were…I don't really know. You were incredibly distraught for a year. You blamed me for her death. Another year passed, and you got over her. At the end of the year, you actually had the nerve to ask me out. I said yes. We dated for two years, and then we married a month ago. I'm pregnant with our second child. This is Alexis. She's your daughter."
Nick's head was spinning. His phone rang, and he picked it up. He was inwardly glad for Hank's call.
