"I can take care of myself, Sasuke-kun," Sakura let out an exasperated sigh as she tried to stand up for the third time and her husband practically materialized by her side to help her, also for the third time.
Ever since Sasuke found out that she was pregnant with their first child, he relentlessly started to baby her, much to her chagrin and inner happiness. He was protective before, but when he learned of the life growing inside her womb, he became so intense of his care for her that the correct term for his attitude was rabid guard dog.
Who knew Sasuke Uchiha, cold, aloof, and indifferent Sasuke, could actually smother someone with affection not usual from the silent shinobi. During the first weeks of her pregnancy, Sakura immensely enjoyed the attention Sasuke was showering her with, and he became so much more attuned to her needs that she couldn't help but fall in love all over again.
Sasuke would wake up about an hour before she did and would carefully get off the bed so as not to disturb her. He would cook the both of them breakfast and brew her favorite jasmine tea, and after that, he would heat the water in the bathroom so that when she woke up, she could instantly take a bath with the raven-haired male waiting for her to finish outside in case she slipped. She had rolled her eyes at that. She was a kunoichi. Kunoichi did not slip on wet bathroom floors.
He would also prepare her clothes for the day, dutifully laying them out on the bed without a hint of complaint on his impossibly handsome face, and her heart would swell with so much love for the simple gestures that he would make. If only the others could see him, but Sakura knew that Sasuke would rather die than show him that side of his.
She had reveled in his one-track minded affection, but as the months passed by, she grew increasingly weary of his paranoia. But despite her slight irritation with his overreacting - as overreacting as Sasuke could get - she did not have the heart to chastise him since she understood why he was so focused with trying to make her as comfortable as possible.
With her pregnancy, it was the start of the restoration of his clan. Their child would be the first Uchiha after its downfall, and high expectations would befall the child as soon as it would be born. But in all actuality, Sasuke and Sakura didn't care about that. Although he didn't show it, Sasuke was more nervous with how to take care of their soon-to-be son or daughter. He didn't know how to be a father, and although he respected Fugaku, he didn't want to be an overbearing dictator like him. He had once whispered his concerns to her while they were in bed, him caressing the small bump on her stomach with a loving gaze that he displayed at sporadic intervals.
"Our child would get the love that it deserves," he had whispered, and tears had gathered in her eyes before nodding in agreement.
Sakura knew that all Sasuke wanted was to give their unborn child the love and tenderness that his own mother gave him and the warmth and care that his own father failed to give. He didn't want the child to become like him, embittered by hate and forever atoning for the sins he committed.
She comprehended his feelings. Really, she did. But sometimes, his overprotectiveness just grated on her nerves. Must be the mood swings.
"Sasuke, for the last time, I can get my own food by myself," she purposely left out the -kun to show him how annoyed she was with his coddling, but Sasuke being Sasuke, just did not care.
He levelled her with his annoyed gaze, refusing to let go of her waist as he led her towards the kitchen. Sakura grumbled all the way despite the tingling sensation she felt with his fingers splayed on her hip. She was about to reach for a glass when Sasuke intercepted her hand and reached for it himself, and she gritted her teeth when he gave her a (drop-dead sexy) smirk.
"Sasuke-kun!" she whined, twisting herself around so that she could face. As she did so, the male placed the glass on the counter behind her and did the same with his hands, trapping her within his arms.
"Sakura," he responded, his black eyes almost dancing with amusement.
She couldn't help but blush at the playful look that he was offering her and to crack a smile. She couldn't stay annoyed with him for so long, especially when he showed her this side of him that only she got to see, the Sasuke that wasn't plagued with nightmares of the past and uncertainty for the future. This was the Sasuke that lived in the present, the man that she adored with all her heart, and the father of the wonderful gift that she was carrying in her body.
Sakura leaned against his chest and breathed in the smell of the forest and his own masculine scent. She wrapped her arms around his neck before tilting her head to look him in the eyes. She could see them softening, and her chest twisted with giddy happiness that made it ache with so much love.
Love. Every time she looked at him, all she could think of was love. Her whole being was bursting with that special emotion that she was afraid she'd go crazy with it.
"I love you so much, Sasuke-kun," she whispered, her viridian eyes glinting, "even though you make me so mad sometimes."
Sasuke hummed before dipping his head to capture her lips in a deep kiss.
