No One
A ghostly feeling passed through him, knocking the wind out of him just as much as the shock did. The shock that he had just been walked through. Someone walked through him! He didn't really know what the exact rules here were, but he was sure that being walked through like a ghost wasn't normal.
Suddenly the pain of it all hit him, making it all the more hard to breathe. He blinked and allowed his lungs to pull in air.
This can't be happening. He thought. Surely this was a dream?
Jack looked around at the rest of the people in the village.
"Hello? Hello?" Jack hoped that he had just imagined what had happened before. He walked up and reached out to touch a man as he hurried along. Jacks fingers passed right through him.
No, no, no!
Jack rushed to another person, and another. But they just walked through him like he wasn't even there.
"Please! Please just look at me! I'm right here! Please, help me!" Jack cried. He stood motionless in the street, as people walked by him or through him.
"Please. I- I… just see me, please?" Jack whispered. Another person passed through him, taking his breath away again. Jack couldn't take it anymore. He took one last look at the village, and started walking to woods.
Jack felt tears prick his eyes, but he squeezed them back as he wandered through the trees. He didn't know where he was going, he just wanted to leave the village.
Jack soon found himself in front of the pond. He stepped onto the ice, and as before, it didn't feel cold to his bare feet. Jack walked to the center. The moon reflected its glowing image off of the pond like a mirror.
"You told me my name is Jack Frost. So, can you… can you tell me why they couldn't see me?" Jack turned his face upward to the moon.
Silence, nothing but silence.
"I… I just don't understand." Jack muttered. Still no answer. Jack waits, and he waits, but he doesn't get an answer.
"Why?" Jack shouts at the sky. "What do you want from me? I must have done something awful to deserve this!"
Jack's cries go un-heard.
"Why!" He screams louder. "Answer me! Please!" Jack falls to his knees, defeated.
"Why?" He whispers as a tear slip down his cheek. Jack curled into a ball on the ice, allowing more tears to fall. The crushing realization finally falling completely on him. No one could see him, no could touch him, no one could talk to him, no one could tell him what was happening, no one could ever comfort him, no one. That's what he had. Absolutely no one.
Sobs racked his body, falling onto the ice and freezing on the surface. Jack felt no shame for his tears, because he couldn't be heard.
Jack cried himself to sleep. He had no dreams. His face held no smile, but no frown either. His mouth was a tight straight line, his colorless cheeks had tear streaks running down them. When Jack awoke, he looked around at his surroundings, confused. Then he remembered the previous night. He shed a few tears, but he did not sob or cry out. Jack found that he had no more tears left, he could not cry. He could not shout, for his voice had been exhausted the night before.
Jack gritted his teeth together. He couldn't live his whole life crying over what couldn't be changed. He must accept the truth.
Jack Frost had no one. The one person who had talked to him must have decided to ignore him, just like everyone else. He wasn't important enough. Jack Frost wasn't worth being heard, he wasn't worth the effort to be comforted. In the minds of many, Jack Frost was nothing but the bitter, cold wind. Or the snow that their children enjoyed. No one knew of this Jack Frost. For they didn't believe he existed.
He did exist. But only Jack himself and the moon knew that. Maybe, just maybe, someday Jack could change that.
