Prolouge - Innocence Lost

Aylana woke up early on the bright July Sunday. After the events of December, she had fallen into a routine. The Guardians had monthly meetings that Aylana attended while her family was at Bible Quizzing tournaments. Aylana now protected her siblings with vigor, knowing it was her job. She often visited the other Guardians and they taught her things that they'd learned over the years. And on Sundays, she woke up at five AM and did what North had said was her job as a summer spirit; she spread warmth and summer to the world. She gave heat waves when people were bored so they could have pool parties and started forest fires when the woods became overgrown.

So, Aylana jumped out of bed and slammed her hand on her ringing clock. She threw her covers into the pile of stuff beside her bed and yanked a red T-shirt over her tank top. She quickly and quietly jumped into her flare jeans and opened the window as quietly as possible, thrusting out into the brisk morning.

She flew to Rochester, New York, the town where she was born in and where she lived until she was seven. Every time she came, she visited her grandparents graves and left a fire flower, her signature and gave them a heat wave, which her grandfather had always loved.

Aylana sighed, reminiscing as she placed the flower beside his grave. She picked up the other wilted, burnt out flower from her last visit and burned it to ash in her hand. She sprinkled the ash around the grave and took to the skies, spreading the warmth required for her to start a heat wave.

She landed on the roof of her favorite skyscraper and lay on her stomach, holding her chin in her hands. The wind blew her dark blonde hair and she giggled. Jack had taught her how to communicate with the wind and now they were friends.

"Hey Wind..." she stood and the wind ruffled her shirt, sending a chill up her spine. "Yeah, nothing much has happened for a while... I'm bored..."

The wind pushed her playfully and she stumbled a bit. She laughed and flew down, landing on the sidewalk. A few people gawked at the sight of her flight, but most were too busy to care. she turned to go to her favorite candy store but she was stopped by a commanding voice.

"Stop right where you are, young lady!"

She turned and saw a police officer stomping towards her. She did her best to look innocent, which for her, usually wasn't hard.

The man stopped in front of her. "What was that stunt?"

Aylana bit her lip."What stunt?" she said in a high, cute voice.

"The one where you jumped off a building and flew to the ground?" he growled.

Aylana giggled nervously. "Oh... That..." she fiddled with the hem of her T-shirt.

The man garbbed her by the shoulder. "Young lady, I think you're going to have to come with me." he began to lead her away.

Aylana planted her feet. "Wait!" she began forming a fire flower in her hand, which she hid behind her back.

The man turned back to her. "What is it!" he demanded. Aylana sped the process of the flower's decay and it burn out in her hand. "What is it!" the man repeated, louder.

She crumbled the fragile, broken flower in her hands. "Oh, nothing... I just wanted to say..." she pulled her hands in front of her face and held the ashes in her cupped hands. "Boo." she blew the ashes into his eyes and he coughed, clenching his eyes shut and trying to get the ashes out of his eyes.

She laughed giddily and took to the sky. She expected the usual people gasping and grabbing for their phones to film her but the city beneath her went on as if she hadn't just propelled herself into the sky using fire jets from her feet.

Aylana frowned and glanced at the police officer, who was just recovering. He glanced around, cursed and moved on. She went down and hovered above him. He didn't react. She waved her hand in front of his face. Still nothing. She hollered in his ear a song about fish and worms. She still got no reaction except him wiping the sweat off his forehead as her heatwave started.

She frowned and sighed, flying back into the clouds. She looked at her watch and gasped. It was already seven! Her parents would wake up in a half hour!

She hurried home, using all the firepower she had (No pun intented). She burst through the window and shut it as quickly and quietly as possible. She glanced around and saw that all was how she left it. She sighed in relief and swiftly made her bed and pulled on Sunday clothes. Just as she pulled out her makeup bag, Lilith groaned from in her bed. Aylana smiled and ran to the bathroom to do her makeup.

"Aylana?" a quiet whimpering voice came from outside of the room. "Aylana!" Lilith called desperately.

Aylana opened the door and peeked out to see Lilith wandering through the hall, tears staining her cheeks.

Aylana gasped and hurried out, stooping down in front of her sister. "Lilith, what's wrong?"

Lilith sniffled. "Aylana, please! I had a nightmare!..." she whimpered.

Aylana smiled sympathetically and held her arms out. "It's okay, Lilith. I'm right here,"

Lilith began to cry again. "Aylana!" she called.

Aylana frowned. "Lilith, what's wrong? I'm right here," she took a step forward.

Lilith sobbed and ran forward...

Right through her older sister.

Aylana stood there, shell shocked for a moment. Tears filled her blue eyes and she clutched at her chest. A horrible emptiness filled her stomach and she turned, running to her sister.

"Lilith! Lilith, I'm right here!" she reached down to hold her sobbing sister but her arms passed right through. Aylana gasped again and fell to the ground.

"Aylana!" Lilith cried. "It's not funny! I'm scared!..."

The two sister sat there, wondering how fate could be so cruel.
