Fair warning that I have only beaten Camille's route and barely started on Howl of the Ravager, which is why I haven't covered Severin's reaction to all this. I might lengthen the thing later, but I doubted there was much fic for the game and wanted to put something up, at least.
Full Camille's route spoilers!
As Lord Severin declared that Lord Alain couldn't sire a child, Camille stood there in horrified realization.
She wasn't just a noble's daughter: she was a merchant's. The language of the Empire had a phrase: to whom the profit?
She knew her brother resented that he hadn't inherited the family's mathematical talent and head for business, but this? "Daniel!" she screamed, in horror that wasn't feigned. She had no idea her brother hated her so much, to crush all her dreams of seeing the outside world so he could have a title that would crush his dreams as well – he'd never hit the books the way she had, he'd always wanted fighting and glory. "You got her pregnant?!"
From the horror on Lady Sophia the not-Barren's face, she'd guessed right.
"What?" her father yelled – a merchant's voice could carry as well as any general's.
"He's been holding secret meetings here – I thought that he was only courting Lady Sophia with her husband's permission so that she would have somewhere to go when Lord Alain divorced her!" As he should have done years ago. The sacred sword needed a heir who wasn't also childless, and Lord Severin put himself on the battlefield constantly – there was no way he'd outlive Lord Alain. "Daniel tried to make me swear that when Lord Alain asked me to become a Noble Companion I would agree, even though that would deprive you of your chosen successor! The child has to be his, I can't believe Daniel would do something like that for any reason other than family!" Or resentment of his more-talented family.
"Daniel!" From the rage in her father's eyes, he was also quick to catch on. "Did you try to deprive me of my chosen heir so your sister would take care of the child you were too cowardly to acknowledge?!" her father drew his sword. "Tell me that my son has not sunk lower than a dockside whore!" Whoring himself out to take the title away from his far worthier sister. "A whore would at least have the sense to use protection!"
"What… Blasphemy!" Aria cried, and Camille hid her relief at the backup. "Inserting a bastard into the line of inheritance of one of the sacred swords?"
"Lord Alain, I swear that my daughter and I had no idea that my idiot son was planning to cuckold you," her father said quickly, already on damage control.
Daniel glanced towards the thrones, but not at Lady Sophia – he was avoiding her eyes. At Lord Alain.
Camille felt a little bad at ruining the plans of the Lord who gave her the opportunity to become a knight, but he'd sold her out first. Giving her brother her title in exchange for her brother's bed-services? She could respect her brother getting a good stud fee for himself, at least.
Whenever she managed to regain her temper she might feel bad about getting her brother sent to Witch's Island (if her father didn't kill him here and now to spare him a more painful death at someone else's hands), but nobody betrayed the Ryne.
Not even another Ryne.
