Disclaimer: Don't own anything but the plot.

Gabriel hummed as he sat on the park bench in Montana. He had just stood up to stalk an abusive father when a brown blur crashed into him, knocking them both to the ground. The girl, who looked to be about eight, jumped up and looked around wildly. A quick glance at her showed obvious signs of abuse.

"Woah, kiddo," he said. "Are you okay?"

The girl backed up like a scared animal. Gabriel, concerned about the girl (and concerned about why he was concerned for a random kid), put her to sleep and transported them both to his apartment.

"Hey, kiddo," Gabriel coo'd softly when the girl woke up. "What's your name?"

"Samantha, sir," she said hesitantly.

That weird feeling piled up in his chest again when she sounded scared of him. Wh– Oh. It clicked.

The child was a fledgling angel that had been born on Earth. It happened sometimes, but it was rare. A child was born normally to its parents, but when Heaven sensed the child they took it away. The only reason she wouldn't have been sensed by now is if her family Hunted.

Gabriel gently coo'd at the baby, as, for an angel, that's what the girl was, and seethed on the inside at the thought of someone harming the child. She slowly moved into his lap, and he changed her clothes into something more comfortable.

A week later and Samantha was completely comfortable with Gabriel. He decided that now was a better time than never to ask her about what happened.

That conversation went like this:

"Sami, kiddo, what happened to your family?"

Sami froze with a terrified look on her face.

"Da–Daddy didn't like me." she stuttered. "He said it was my fault for my Mama's death."

Gabriel held the girl in his lap, stroking her hair and humming in Enochian.

"Mr.–"

"I told you sweetie, it's just Gabriel or Gabe."

"Okay, Gabriel?"

"Yes Sami?"

"Why do you keep me around?"

Gabriel froze. He didn't really want to explain her angel-ness to her, but…

"Do you know what angels are, Sami?"

"Yea, the bird-people in Heaven, right?"

Gabriel snorted. "More like… winged warriors. A baby angel is called a fledgling. Did you know that a fledgling is rarely born on Earth?"

"Really?"

"Really, kiddo. Wanna know why I'm telling you this?"

"Why?"

"Because… Because you are one."

"Rea–Really?"

"Yeah."

"Are you an angel?"

"Yeah."

"Can I stay with you?"

"Of course, Sami."

"Are you my big brother?"

"Uh– Yeah, Sami. All angels are siblings. So yeah, I'll be your big brother."

"Forever?"

"Yeah, lil' sis."

The next few weeks were spent with Gabriel telling Samantha tale after tale about Heaven.
