His breath puffed out in the warm, musty air as he almost tripped on the slippery rock surface. He heard the clacking of the piranha's jaws as he raced by, again nearly slipping and tumbling to his death.
He groaned mentally as he saw the series of obstacles in his path. Really? Yes, most of them were the result of the age and lack of care devoted to the ancient temple, but the rest were enough to keep even the best out.
He just kept running.
Just as he was starting to get a tiny bit bored of the monotonus running and leaping and diving, a new sort of obstruction appeared- Now he would have to slide under tree branches.
Great.
He kept running.
And running.
And running.
All of this running was interspersed with random jumps, leaps, and dives, made to avoid those stupid obstacles.
As he was running, wind caressing his hair, he approached a break in the path. It was not the first he had come to. He prepared his body to leap from the hard stone ground and leapt for all he was worth over this extra-long break in the path he had been running on.
He watched as the stagnant, blue-green water flew beneath him as he landed and continued to run, feet pounding the ground, beating it like there was no tomorrow.
He rounded a corner, almost slipping on the treacherous grass that had sprung up between the paving stones in the temple's years of neglect.
He continued this way for a minute or two, the rabid monkey chasing him heavily audible in the thick, oppressive silence.
Until, suddenly-
"Hey, Alex! Did you hear about Sarah and Oliver?"
"Tom! I was about to beat my high score!" Alex exclaimed indignantly at the sudden interruption. The 'Game Over' screen appeared on his screen, bearing out his disappointment.
