Falsehood

By Any Unborn Child

Edward Elric had been taught by books, by the permanency of the words of alchemists before him, that a homunculus was a created being, something that was not a real human, something that resulted from a failed transmutation. In his earlier years, in his infancy of being an alchemist, he read the definitions – he could identify the symbols. He read the guides as if they were his own personal bible. But if he could not see it, if he could not experience the reality of a homunculus, however uncommon it might have been, the idea would not be concrete to him.

That is…until much later…

Envy had always known that he was something created. He took his abilities and used them to his advantage. He could create catastrophes, calamities, and all at will. Nothing could be said about it, and nothing could be done about it after he was finished – no one would be able to pass the blame on him anyway – they would all think that humans, those foolish, pathetic things, were the cause, as they had been for many years. He reveled in the pain and suffering of humans – they didn't know their place, and never would unless he did something about it.

The remnants of Edward's shattered past followed him wherever he went – all he had to do was turn, and he could see his brother's soul keeping house in a suit of armor, or look down at his arm and leg, the metal shining in the sun's light. He had he been responsible for so much, and that was the price to pay for the actions that had taken place.

Like it or not, Envy did have his insecurities. His fear of Father's disapproval, though outwardly his pride hid this well, had driven him to shouting and screams that echoed within the confines of his own mind – he perpetuated his own jealousy at the humans that he imitated, mimicked, destroyed, crushed under his hand.

The promise…that everything would be all right – the wish, the hope, the drive that kept Edward sane…

The cycle…the one that Envy had been going through for so many years, his own namesake driving his every action…

Everything…

…seemed false now.
