"Are you sure you want to do this?" Severus asked Lily, looking at the cold river at the bottom of the hill they were standing on.
"Positive," Lily said, giving a mischievous grin.
"Alright, let's do it."
Lily grabbed his hand and started counting.
"3...2...1!"
With a hard but still gentle pull, Lily and Severus rolled down the hill.
Lily pulled him close and started laughing from her adrenaline rush, showing her Gryffindor side.
"THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!" she yelled.
Severus had to agree.
Maybe it was just being this close to Lily (they hadn't done anything like this since the summer before second year), or maybe because this made him feel like a seven year old instead of fifteen year old. Either way, something was making him giddy and excited to be rolling down a hill toward a ice cold river in the middle of summer.
Lily tightened her grip around him and they hit the river.
Both stayed under water for a few seconds, holding hands and giggling at each other.
When they finally swam up for air, Lily got out and sat with her legs in the water.
Severus came to join her and wrapped his arm around her.
"You must be freezing," he said, taking notice of her soaking cold dress.
"You must be too. Your jeans will take forever to dry out."
He shrugged.
His mom might bite his head off for ruining good clothes, but it was his clothes and he didn't care.
"You know, I'm sorry we haven't hung out much. I've just been...busy, you know? My parents want to know every detail about my year and Petunia barely speaks to me. She's such a brat sometimes. Especially to you," she said, watching him with an apologetic look.
Those eyes! How am I supposed to say anything to those eyes? Severus thought.
He sighed, "I know. It's not your fault. Today was so nice though, I mean, everyday with you is nice anyways. But it's so much better without Potter or Black around."
"I know. I wish today didn't have to end. If we could stay here, at the bottom of this hill, forever, well...I'd never want anything to change that," Lily said, looking up at him and smiling.
"You're my best friend, Sev."
"You're sure? You won't leave me and run off with Potter or Black, right?"
"I don't see it in my immediate future," she laughed.
Severus got up and grabbed a rock that was a few feet away.
As he sat back down with Lily, he grabbed a permanent marker and started to write on the rock.
"What are you writing?" she asked, trying to see.
"If you wanna know," he said, putting the marker away, "you need to catch it."
Severus jumped into the river and started swimming across with the rock in his hand.
All night Lily chased Severus around, trying to catch the rock.
Years later, Albus Severus Potter and Lily Luna Potter were running down the same hill.
"HEY! STAY STILL! LILY!" the little boy yelled.
"No way Albus. The point of tag is for you to catch me, duh."
"Ugh, fine," he said, running after her.
Lily stopped after a few minutes and called Albus over to her.
"What's that?" she asked, pointing to a rock with writing on it.
"I don't know," he said, picking it up.
Both looked at the rock and read aloud,
"Severus Snape and Lily Evans. Best friends forever, for always."
