Kate sat at the lunch table, feigning a laugh at something that someone had said. She didn't know what the joke was, or even who had said it but everybody else had laughed so she was sure that she should do so as well. It helped to bring her out of the daze that she had fallen into.
"So Kate, are you up for going to the mall?"
She had managed to hear that and she turned her head to nod at the girl who had asked. "I suppose so." She wasn't that excited about shopping as she wasn't keen on the girl who had asked but she knew that she should delegate her time between all of her followers.
"I might come along as well. There was this killer pair of jeans that I saw and I fell in love with them instantly."
Kate's heart lifted at the sound of Claire's voice. For a moment she wondered if she had fallen back into her daze but everyone was staring at her, waiting to see if the social invitation had been accepted. "Yeah sure," she tried to ignore the smile that was attempting to mould her lips as she spoke, trying to make it seem nonchalant but she wasn't able to quench the fluttering that now occupied her stomach.
It had been happening more recently, and at a stronger strength. Every time that Kate looked at Claire she found it hard to turn away again.
Claire nodded, oblivious to Kate's turmoil of emotions and continued to pick at her lunch tray, making a joke about the food. This time Kate heard the joke and couldn't help but laugh a little too loudly, getting a couple of questioning looks. She smiled, making herself appear cute and the looks vanished.
After lunch Kate was walking to class, grateful to have some time alone to work through her feelings when Claire came up to her. She automatically stood up taller, sucking her stomach in further, trying to make herself appear at least slightly more beautiful.
"I am not looking forward to class today."
Kate decided to agree, even though she didn't mind the class. "Me neither. It's going to be hell."
"Yeah, especially for me."
"Why?"
Claire grabbed onto Kate's arm to stop her moving and leaned in close, whispering. "I'm sitting next to that girl Stephanie, and I found out that she's a lesbian. How pathetic is that? I swear she keeps looking down my top as well!"
Kate almost stumbled, the butterflies in her stomach transforming into rabid dogs, "yeah, re…really pathetic."
Claire giggled, continuing on to class. "I know, she really is."
