Across the narrow bridge they ran,
Then Gandalf took his final stand:
"Begone," he cried, "You shall not pass!
"Now to the Shadow be thou cast!"
The Balrog seemed to dim in flame,
But Darkness then increased again.
At once a fiery sword was raised,
But Glamdring white in answer blazed.
The swords in fury met and clashed:
The fiery blade in pieces dashed.
"You shall not pass! You shall not pass!"
Upon the bridge smote Gandalf's staff.
The bridge was cracked; the demon fell!
His whip brought Gandalf down as well.
The others wept and mourned to see
Their Leader fall so helplessly.
Away they turned and ran to go
To Dimrill Gate of long ago.
