DM Life, Death and Mumps
It was early morning in the Gru residence, and the sunrise was shining through the curtains of the girls' bedroom. ''I'm hot!'' Edith moaned getting out of bed and heading for the bathroom to splash some cold water on her face. Then as she looked in the mirror, she got a shock. ''I look like a hamster!'' Edith shrieked running back into the room she shared with her sisters.
''Edith, what on earth?'' Margo moaned sleepily. ''I think she said she looks like a hamster'' Agnes replied. Meanwhile the noise had brought Gru and Lucy hurrying into the room. ''Is something wrong?'' Lucy questioned, looking at the three girls. ''Edith looks like a hamster!'' Agnes piped. ''Ok, let me see'' Gru sighed, looking at Edith who looked very hot and flushed.
''Edith'' he said with a frown, ''I think dat you have de mumps''. ''Oh my gosh'' Lucy exclaimed, feeling Edith's head, ''You're burning up, Gru I'll just get the thermometer''. ''My head hurts'' Edith moaned staggering over to her bed. Gru picked her up, cuddled her and lay her in bed. Seconds later, Lucy had returned with the thermometer.
She slipped it into Edith's mouth and waited for a few seconds. Then she read the results. ''You've got a high temperature sweetie'' she said. ''Poor Edith'' Gru said, ''You've definitely got de mumps''. He turned to the other two girls. ''Come on Margo, Agnes rise and shine''. As Edith watched Lucy and her sisters leave the room, Gru turned back to her and said,
''Lucy and I will be around if you need anything, ok?''. Edith nodded. She snuggled down under the comfort of her duvet. Meanwhile, at the breakfast table, the family was talking about what to do that day. ''It's such a fine dey'' Gru said, ''Why don't you girls play in de garden?''. ''Sure'' Margo answered. Outside Agnes thought she saw something move on the ground. ''Margo, what's that?'' she shrieked. ''It's okay Agnes'' Margo reassured, ''It's only a baby bird''. She carefully picked up the bird and carried it inside. Gru meanwhile was looking at some plans in the lab when Margo arrived with the baby bird.
''Margo'' Gru questioned suspiciously, ''What's dat you've got there?''. Margo showed her father the little bird. ''Eh could I have an old box for it?'' she asked. ''Margo'' he said, ''Eet's not a good idea to handle strange animals, they could make you ill''. ''But this bird looks cold and weak'' Margo protested, ''and it's not a strange animal anymore''.
''Ok, you can have a box for your bird'' Gru said, ''I get dat you're only trying to help''. He turned to Mark the minion. ''Mark, could you go and give Edith some ice cream for her throat?''. Mark found Edith watching the flat screen, ''Para tu'' he said. Her eyes lit when she saw the ice cream, even though her checks were still swollen.
''Strawberry, my favourite'' she declared, ''thank you''. That night Margo placed the box with the bird in it on the shelf near her bed. ''I'll take good care of you Chirpy'' she promised, as she climbed into bed. [next morning] ''Margo!'' Agnes shouted, ''your bird won't wake up''. ''Who won't wake up?'' Edith yawned sleepily. ''My bird'' Margo panicked. ''What bird?'' Edith cranked. She was still feeling rough from the mumps.
Before any of the girls could say anything else, Gru came in to say good morning. ''Dad!'' Margo fretted, ''My bird won't wake up''. Gru took one good look at the lifeless baby bird, then put his arm around her. ''Margo honey, I have something very sad to tell you'' he said
quietly, ''Dat bird is...dead''. ''No!'' Margo gasped. ''I'm afraid so'' Gru said shaking his head. He held Margo tightly while she cried. That afternoon, Gru's mom came round for a visit. She had brought one of her delicious homemade cakes. Today it was Red Velvet.
''Come on sweetie'' Lucy said to Margo as they sitting down for tea, ''This is your favourite''. ''I'm not hungry'' Margo muttered, her eyes were red from crying. ''Son'' Gru's mom said, ''remember all the times when you had to deal with death when you were a kid?''. ''Yes Mom'' Gru said. His mom looked at Margo and said ''I think we should bury that bird''. ''Ok'' Margo said quietly.
She knew Gru's mom was right. Outside Margo carried the dead bird in its box [now with a lid on it] while Agnes helped dig a hole. Margo carefully placed the box in the hole and Agnes covered it with soil. Lucy held Margo tightly the same way Gru had done as she started to cry again. ''I hate all this death'' Margo sobbed, ''It's horrible and that bird was only a baby''.
''But it was sick with cold Margo'' Lucy said gently, 'It was too weak to stay alive''. ''I'd better be going now'' Gru's mom said, ''See you soon''. ''Bye Mom'' Gru said, ''Lucy I'd better go and check on Edith''. ''Ok'' Lucy nodded hugging Margo. Gru found Edith lying on the sofa playing with her gigapet. ''Here, I brought some ginger ale in case you get thirsty''.
''Thanks'' Edith mumbled. Knowing that she wanted some TLC, Gru gave her a big hug. Then he felt her head, ''No school for a week I'm afraid keeton, you're not well enough''. Gru had never thought two things would happen at the same time. ''Dis is amazing'' he thought.
