He always knew she would break him one day. That day had long since come. And now sometimes he found himself wondering 'what's the point?' But nonetheless, he kept on going. He kept going, but he was numb now. He was reckless, and for a moment he even thought he was God. He supposes that was ended up killing him, really. But he could trace everything back to her. He was broken after the Time War, sure. And she'd fixed him then. But he was even worse off now, and she wasn't here to fix him. If he was honest with himself, he knew if she was here he wouldn't need fixing. But she wasn't. And now he was dead. He remembers what he told her so many years ago. "See, Time Lords have this little trick, it's sort of a way of cheating death. Except... it means I'm going to change. And you're not going to see me again... Not like this. Not with this daft old face." A daft face, certainly, he thought, placing a cold hand on his cheek. He saw the gold start to seep from his fingers. And he remembered... cheating death, sure. But not really. Because it was a lot like dying. Because his entire consciousness would change. He remembered Rose's words. "I'm a Time Lord," he'd said. "I'm the last of them. They're all gone. I'm the only survivor. I'm left travelling on my own because there's no-one else." And then Rose, beautiful, amazing Rose, "There's me."
"But you're not here now, are you?" he murmured to himself. A sad smile crossed his face. "Time to forget," he breathed. With that he burst into golden light, allowing his mind to shut down within the golden agony.
