"This weeks assignment is, wait for it... DUETS!" Mr Schuester exclaimed, clapping his hands with excitement to bring enthusiasm to the bunch of bored teenagers in front of him. "Once again we'll pair up and seen as you all loved our Duets competition last time, the winners will once again win a dinner to Breadstix."
At least the mention of Breadstix could add a little life into the Glee Club who had become lifeless lately in between West Side Story, football and finals, not to mention their personal lives. Will had been trying for weeks to perk them up, actually get them excited for Sectionals this year - they just had to make it to Nationals and win this time. For a second, it looked like he had every on board with his assignment, until Rachel Berry perked up. "Mr Schuester, I regret to inform you that we already have had a Duets competition and I believe it's time to add some newer ideas into Glee Club. Your methods have become somewhat tiresome and as the New Directions, I believe we should be coming up with new ideas."
"Now normally I'd agree, Rachel" Mr Schuester argued, fully used to living a lifelong battle with Rachel, the known diva of the group. "But we're drifting apart as a group and I think it's time to bring us back as a group. So, I've put all of your names in this hat and when you're ready, you can draw out the name of the person you'll be working with. Who's up first?"
As Rachel slumped in her seat, defeated once more by Mr Schue, Finn stepped up sheepishly to the top hat balanced on the piano. After a long fumble in the hat, like a child in a lucky dip, he drew out a piece of paper and read it out loud. "Tina" he shrugged, smiling at the shy Asian girl who didn't seem bothered either way by her partner.
After that, Quinn sauntered to the front and picked out the paper, reading it to herself before actually announcing it to the class. She raised an eyebrow then cursed under her breath, "Berry" she groaned in disbelief. "Mr Schue, do I really have to?" she pleaded, using her best puppy dog eyed expression in hope that her favourite teacher would let her off the hook.
"Sorry Quinn, que sera sera..." Will laughed, hoping that Quinn would understand her. When she raised her eyebrow yet again to him, he added "whatever will be, will be." Quinn sighed and returned to her seat just before Rachel whipped her head around to Quinn and said "Quinn, I suggest we start working immediately!" She was about to carry on into the usual rant about how vital it is to practice before competitions, when she was cut off by Santana.
"Shut it, Dwarf. Some of us want to know who we're with before you make it the Rachel Berry show yet again." Santana snapped, her words sharp like the razors that were rumoured to be hidden in her hair. After Santana drew out Puck's name, the two of them bumped their fists together in a bromantic fashion. The rest drew out their names one by one; Mercedes was with Artie, Kurt was with Brittany and strangely enough Blaine was with Mike. As the bell rung, Rachel caught up with Quinn who had tried darting off right at the end of the lesson.
"Quinn! Wait! I need to talk to you! As the most talented person in Glee Club, I feel it is my right to win this competition and we must put in all efforts. Come to my house tonight and we'll come up with song choices."
Quinn flipped her hair and mumbled "whatever" before floating out of glee club and to her next lesson. She heard Rachel yell "6 o'clock, don't be late" behind her and made a mental note. Why did she have to be partnered with Rachel of all people? She'd probably come up with some terrible showtune and make Quinn mindlessly harmonise in the back like a prop whilst she was the real star. And there was nothing Quinn wanted less than to spend extra time with the whiny Rachel Berry; it was bad enough having to spend time with her in Glee Club but now she had to have supper with the Berrys? This was not going to be a fun evening...
