Chapter One: The Reaping

Disclaimer: I only own Nicole Sampson, which I just made up on the spot.

I was looking forward to the end of the reaping. Soon I would be able to help mom with her business, laundry. I learned how to do laundry when I was two, which explains my worn out and cracked hands. I always enjoyed doing it, though. I knew it would bring dinner on the table.

My dad was a muscular man. He earned his muscles by endless years of labor in the factory. I lived in district eight, where we make the suits for the Peacemakers. My mom was a beautiful woman stricken by years. She has done numerous amounts of laundry. So much that if you trace lightly on her skin, she will bleed. I've gotten used to the sight of her blood and I've memorized the exact location of the bandages. We can't afford much other than food and bandages.

I am an only child and not really much of a people person. I like to lay on my bed, thinking about whatever comes to mind. I am not miserable, but I am not happy either. I don't participate much in school. I get good grades, but I'm pretty much silent all the time. I have nothing to come home to. Nothing special, that is.

The Capitol is having children 12-18 participate in 'The Hunger Games'. It starts out with the reaping. At the reaping they have reaping balls, which hold the name of every child in the district's name in there. They have two reaping balls, one for male tributes and one for the female tributes. When you're 12, you get entered 1 time. When you're 13, 2 times. If you're 14, 3 times. It goes on until you're 19 and you're name is taken out of the reaping balls for good. If you're called, you go to the Capitol to train, meet your mentor, and get interviewed.

Once it's time for the actual Games ( which is a fight to the death on live TV) you enter the arena and fight. Every 25 years, they have a special kind of Games called the Quarter Quell. The teachers didn't go into it that much.

My life isn't that special, which is why I was shocked when they called my name at the reaping.

Author's note: ha ha! You're left hanging there! Well, I hope you hold on! In the meanwhile, why don't you review? ;D
