Schuyler Van Alen lay on her back on her double bed. She was holding Jane Eyre above her face, reading the words and thinking about how different things would be in a few days. Oliver Hazard-Perry, her best friend, sat at her feet, watching a trashy VH1 reality show and laughing quietly with an amused expression on his cute face. Schuyler smiled.

She continued to read, shaking her blue-black bangs from her eyes. Just three days ago, in a rebel fit, she'd died her light brown hair black. She felt it suited her personality better and most certainly enhanced her beautiful, doll-like features. Ollie said it make her look older, which was a welcome compliment to a fourteen year old girl constantly getting asked how she could possibly be going in 9th grade when she looked like a ten year old.

Schuyler playfully kicked Ollie. He looked over at her so she could see him roll his eyes and then he turned back to the screen. They would be starting high school in a few days as freshmen. Even though she'd be going to the same school that she went to elementary school at, the prestigious Duchesne, high school was a big deal. It meant she was no longer a little kid but finally a young woman. The thought made her giddy.

Unable to focus on Jane and Rochester's love story any longer, she kicked Ollie again.

"Yes, Skye?" Ollie asked, his voice teasing.

"You know what?" Schuyler responded.

"What?" Ollie questioned her, still grinning at his silly best friend.

"You're my best friend."

Oliver laughed deeply. His voice had changed over the summer. Though once sort of squeaky, it was now deeper and gruffer. It suited him well. "Thanks for stating the obvious."

"Well, I mean, I just thought you should know since we'll be in high school in a few days. I don't want you to like make a new best friend and forget me or anything," Schuyler giggled.

"Well, you know what, you're my best friend and that's not going to change, ever."

"I know," Schuyler smiled in all her naiveté. She hoped he was right.

Author's note: Just a little one shot I did out of boredom. I always loved Schuyler and Oliver's friendship, so I wanted to write a fanfic about them before things got complicated by Schuyler's blue blood and Oliver's status of her Conduit/familiar. Read and Review!
