What had once been the sunny skies of Malibu were now dominated by angry stormclouds, casting their fury on the citizens below. Raindrops pelted the asphalt, only reminding him of the sharp knives stabbing at his heart. It was almost ironic; e was leaving everything he had ever known, everyone he loved, and yet he was fine with that. It almost came as a relief to him. After all, if he got away from the memories, then he would get away from the pain, right?
"Sir? You may board now," the flight attendant's cheery voice didn't seem to realize that the weather was somewhat gloomy. Silently, he began to obey her. However, doubts began to form in his mind the second his foot touched the first stair leading into the airplane. His breath catching in his throat, he turned and looked back at what would soon be his former home. Was he really doing the right thing, leaving like this? Maybe she hadn't meant to hurt him. Maybe the thing that had torn all of their lives apart wasn't really her fault. Maybe he should have at least said goodbye . . .
No. He had to do this. He wouldn't sit and watch her live her life, knowing that she would never be his. It was just easier to run away.
Without another backward glance, he got on the plane and found his seat. Surprisingly enough, the rain seemed harsher from inside the security of the airplane. The raindrops hit the window like bullets, making an incessant pounding sound in his ears. Before the rain could make a true impact on him, however, the engines roared to life. As the wheels pulled the plane onto the runway, he whispered the two words he would never have the courage to say.
"Goodbye, Lilly."
Watching from inside the glass walls of the terminal, a single emotion-filled tear ran down her cheek. She had been the one thing that had caused him to leave, and now she was too late to stop him. Not that having him there would let them be together. She would never be his, and it was her fault. Maybe if she hadn't been so trusting, this wouldn't have happened to her.
Her best friend's brother came up behind her. His voice was flat and lifeless as he said, "We should go get ready, Lilly. The ceremony starts in a couple hours." He sadly chuckled. "Wouldn't want to be late to our own wedding."
Lilly almost choked upon hearing Jackson's words, but she held it in. After all, he was giving up his future for her.
She slowly turned and walked over to him. Letting him put his arm over her shoulders. As he led her away, Lilly heard the roar of an airplane taking off. Whispering so quietly that not even Jackson would hear, she said, "Goodbye, Oliver."
Ok, this is probably really confusing, but all will be explained in due time. However, send me any questions you have and I'll try to answer them without giving away too much. Review!
