. . . . . .
A hard elbow in the stomach woke Jimmy Brooks up with a jolt.
"Hey, man, Kendra's next up," Spinner whispered as Jimmy rubbed his eyes and yawned.
Toby finished his menorah lighting as Jimmy readjusted in his seat.
"And now, for something completely different, Craig Manning and Ashley Kerwin singing I'll spend Christmas with You. ," JT announced from the stage, and the couple strode on to the stage.
Ashley had a blank look on her face that caused Jimmy to wrinkle his eyebrows in not only confusion but recognition -- she was in shock. As Craig's first lyric faltered and he turned to hiss at Ashley, Jimmy was transfixed as she slapped him and bolted from the room.
Craig ran after her, leaving the stage empty and the audience silenced. JT stuttered in announcing Kendra's dance early, and as the loud music and flashy fabric whipped past him, he slid out the auditorium doors.
Jimmy wasn't sure where he was going or what he was doing, but Ashley had looked so . . . hurt, and for some odd reason he felt he needed to apologize. In Jimmy's mind, whatever Craig had done, it was Jimmy's fault -- he should have been there, he should have known what was happening, he should have protected her.
Random thoughts ran through his head as he ran with no direction. Buildings and street signs fell behind him and soon he stopped under a street lamp to nurse the stitch in his side.
Looking up and trying to regain his breath, he noticed a figure across the street on a bench, looking over at him. A car drove past and as the headlights shone up on the figure, Jimmy recognized one Ashley Kerwin.
"Ashley," he called to her, then ran across the street. She stared at him the entire time, and when he got next to her he noticed her eyes were swollen from tears.
She stood to leave, saying, "Leave me alone," but she began to cry again. She dug around in her pockets for spare change for the pay phone. When she came up empty, a fresh burst of sobs erupted from her.
As she stood on the walk, crying, he approached her from behind and feeling his nearness, she turned to him and buried her head into his shirt. She kept crying, soaking his t-shirt, as he gently rocked her back and forth.
"It'll be okay," he repeated over and over softly and when she was ready to talk again, she raised her head to him, backing away from his warm embrace.
"It was Craig, he, he cheated on me," she said, turning from him once more, "I, I think I can walk home from here."
She began to walk away until he shouted her name once more. She turned on her heel and shouted an acidic, "What do you want from me? It's late, my parents are probably worried."
"Ashley," he repeated, "I'm sorry."
She stood there for a moment, looking at him, then walked into the darkness. There, he had said his apology, had he not? That had been what had been bothering him -- so why, now that it had been said, did he still have the urge to chase after her?
In order to get her out of his head, he knew it would require perhaps more than a simple apology.
