An Unexpected Statement
-What, you don't speak now that you're chief- Burke!
-What do you want?
-What?
-What do you want? You don't want to go out to dinner. You don't want to meet me in the on-call room, and you sure as hell don't want to talk to me! So tell me, what do you want!
-Don't yell at me!
-Fine.
-Wait-we're having a conversation here!
-Well what do you want!
-I don't know!
(He kisses her)
-Figure it out!

What if this was different? What if instead of Burke walking away, Christina let something slip?
-Figure it out!
"I'm pregnant," she said, her voice low and quiet, half-hoping he wouldn't hear her.
Burke had his hand on the door, holding it open a crack. He froze, then let go and turned around slowly.
"You're what?" his voice was as quiet as hers, filled with kindness and worry, the opposite tone of his previous statement.
"I'm pregnant," her voice dropping even more as she concentrated on the floor, avoiding his gaze. "Six weeks. It's yours." Christina mentally kicked herself for being so blunt, but the dirty white floor tiles were the only thing she was thinking of. If she could stare at anything but his eyes, it would be okay. She regretted her decision of telling him now. That was never in the plan. He wasn't going to make her keep it though. He couldn't-
"How long have you known?" his question cut off her rambling mind. What was that supposed to mean? That had nothing to do with her current problem, which was finding a way out of the stairwell. Burke was conveniently blocking it with his body. He can't be that strong, can he? She was small. Maybe if she slipped behind him-
"Christina?"
"Um, three weeks?" she offered.
"Why are you telling me now?" he said, sinking down with his back against the door.
Damn it, she thought, her only exit. Now she was getting defensive!
"I wasn't planning on telling you now. I wasn't going to tell you. I've made my decision to not have it. You don't need to do anything or commit to anything. It will all be over next week and we'll never have to bring this up again!"
She lunged for the door and tried to pull it open, but his weight against it made the door move only a few centimeters. Burke stood up and pulled her hand off of the handle. She felt his other hand on her chin. As he tipped it up, their eyes met.
"I'm here for you," she looked down again. "Do you want me to go with you?"
"You don't have to; I already said you didn't have to worry about this."
"But do you want me there?"
She thought about this statement, and how much better she would feel if he was there. Looking up again, a tear started forming her eye. She closed them softly, and it fell down her cheek. All she could do was nod her head slowly and allow him to come closer. He wrapped his arms tightly around her as she buried her face in his chest. His head fell limply above her shoulder and they stood. Just standing there, comforting each other, until they broke apart. Christina seemed unable to stand on her own, and her body began to sway back and forth. Burke grabbed her just as she fell, and carried her into the hallway, looking for help.
