Stepping On Glass

Edd sat on the edge of his bed, legs crossed; a textbook resting in his lap. He was bored and lonely and had been since he returned from school. He attempted to call Eddy and once braved the icy rain to knock on his door. Of course Edd knew he was out enjoying his newfound social life, but it was worth a shot. After he returned home he gave up on the notion of seeing Eddy that night. He supposed he could keep himself entertained with re-reading some old textbooks. And yet, though he was reading a fascinating article on the History of the Achaemenid Empire, his mind kept drifting to the same thoughts that were always present when he as alone. He allowed himself to smile at the off-color thoughts, a hot blush creeping across his face. Edd looked to his phone and pressed a button to illuminate the screen. No missed calls, no text messages. Nothing. He sighed. Edd closed his textbook and placed it on the floor. The rain was lighting up outside, though a few bright veins of lightning still crossed the sky. It was still fairly early. Eddy might still come over and cure him of his boredom, even if they were just to talk about the awesome things Eddy did with his other friends. He lay back on his soft bed and covered his eyes with the crook of his elbow. He tried to escape the thoughts of Eddy, but the infestation of them was great in the dead silence that was the norm of Edd's house. He really wished he had a radio.

A soft tinkering noise came to his window, but Edd wasn't even phased by the sound; dismissing it as the rain. Edd shifted and turned to look at his phone sitting nicely on his bed. It was bright and he sat up, completely excited, and grabbed it up in his hands. It was a new text message from Eddy. His screen simply read 'go outside.' Edd tilted his head in confusion, answering back, rather slowly, a simple 'why'? As soon as he hit send, a loud crash echoed in his ears, cold air instantly whooshing into his heated room. Edd felt his stomach jump up into his throat. He let out a loud gasp and stood up in an instant. A rather good-size rock landed near his feet. His eyes were large saucers, his breathe coming out in breathy heaves as he stumbled hesitantly over to his window. A gaping hole sat in the middle. In the yard stood his best friend. It didn't take long for Edd to put two and two together. His eyebrows furrowed, his fear instantly replaced by uncontrollable anger. He pulled up the window and stuck his head out into the cold weather.

"What on Earth-? Eddy, why did you-?" He couldn't even formulate a coherent sentence with how mad he was. He stepped back from the window, wary of the glass that littered his carpet. He seized up the rock and returned. "A rock, Eddy? Really? You don't throw rocks, you're supposed to throw pebbles!" Edd shrieked, tossing it back out into the yard, careful not to hit Eddy with it; though he really wanted too.

"I did throw pebbles, but I figured a rock would get your attention better. I was right, wasn't I?" Eddy called out, covering his face to block the rain while he looked up. Edd glared at him crazily, lips pursed in annoyance. "Jus' lemme up. I'm gettin' friggin wet out here!" He yelled out, pulling his hood on. Edd sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Eddy, do you realize how long it's going to take me to pick up and vaccuum these shards of glass? I can't allow you up; my luck you'll step on one!" He explained slowly, ducking back into the window to avoid the sudden increase in rainfall. "Go on home; you'll catch your death in this rain!" Edd warned, going to shut the window, when he heard his name being called. He looked down at Eddy once more with an exasperated 'what'?

"Let's go for a drive."
