Disclaimer: If I owned Heroes… Huh, I can't seem to think of a witty comment to make. I'm losing my touch.
Hiro wondered if his father was angry with him. Judging by his current state of "locked in a cell," most probably yes. He still wasn't sure what he'd done, though. Maybe it had something to do with knocking over that old vase, although he couldn't see why anyone would be upset over the ugly thing breaking.
"But why did Tou-san have to take away my game?" he complained to the empty room.
"Are they locking up children now, too? My, the Company has seen better days."
Hiro jumped. "Who said that?" he demanded to the walls.
"Well, I did, of course," said the voice.
"Who're you? Are you invisible?"
The voice chuckled. "No, I'm in the cell next to yours. Tell me, what terrible offense have you committed against the Company so that they've labeled you a threat to their security?"
Hiro grimaced. "I broke something."
"…Well, their standards for potentially dangerous individuals have certainly gone down," the voice said. "I'm Adam, by the way."
"I'm Nakamura Hiro! What did you do so that they sent you down here, Adam-san?"
The silence stretched unnaturally long, and for a moment Hiro wondered if Adam didn't want to talk to him anymore. Hiro hoped that wasn't it, because he was starting to like Adam. He seemed nice.
Hiro was relieved when he finally answered. "Similarly to you, I broke something- well, I almost did. Never actually got around to the actual smashing part, though."
"Really? How long have you been down here? I hope they let us out soon, I'm really hungry.
"I suspect that you'll be let out soon," Adam said lightly. "I've been in here a while, though, so sometimes I wonder if they even remember they left me down here."
"No way!" Hiro said in disdain. "When they come get me, I'll make sure they let you go, too! I won't leave without you, ever!"
"That's a nice thing to say."
The door to Hiro's cell swung open, and he turned to see his father, standing stern-faced and obviously still upset. Hiro smiled at him sheepishly, pushing up his glasses.
"Hiro," his father called.
Hiro ran to his side. "Tou-san, there's a nice man over there who's been here a while, shouldn't we let him go now, too? He didn't really do anything bad- he didn't even break anything like I did." His father seemed oddly disturbed.
"There is no one there, Hiro," he said. "Come." He grabbed Hiro's hand and pulled him away, despite Hiro's protests.
While they passed, Hiro thought he heard Adam's voice again. "It's nice to say, Carp, but words don't mean anything."
He wondered if Adam was angry with him.
