A/N: feedback, feedback, feedback
Hermione picked up the knife and walked slowly into the bathroom. No one noticed because, quite frankly, there was no one to notice. They were all gone. Every one of them. Her parents, Harry, Ron, the Weasleys. Everyone who wasn't a deatheater or Voldemort supporter was dead. Most had been hit with the killing curse but those unfortunate few who weren't, had died a slow and painful death. If even one of them had survived she would've been able to cope, but not even Malfoy had been allowed to live.
It had started when Ginny died. That was when the first part of her had died. Each time one of them was lost to the war, a piece of her had gone with them. Slowly and gradually she had faded away. The last straw had been Blaise's death. He had been her protector in the end. He'd found them a hideout, taken care of her and, most of all, kept her sane.
But now there was nothing or no one to keep her from going over the edge. She was an empty shell free now to plunge over into the endless abyss that was death.
She shook back the sleeve of her robe and placed the blade against her bare arm. It looked like some sort of modern art: the metallic glint of the blade contrasting sharply with the milky white of her skin.
Slowly, carefully she drew the blade across her arm. The blood. It reminded her of all the blood shed on the battlefields. The people who were disfigured and dismembered before being killed. She didn't want to think about that, so she concentrated on the pain. Embracing it, she felt alive for the first time in months. She let it awaken her soul, so numb from the hurt and hatred.
She drew the blade across: again and again and again. Her blood ran like water. The bathroom tiles were now awash in red. She had always liked red. As her life drained away she looked up at her reflection. And then she did something she hadn't done for nearly a year. She smiled – a true smile, no veneer like before. It was over now. Finally.
