A/N: Just a little Bones piece I wrote after watching the last episode again yesterday (:

Spoilers for...well, what's going on between seasons, I guess. And a reference to a quote in "Intern in the Incinerator."

Hope you enjoy! I don't own Bones or any of the characters.

Daffodils

"Booth?"

Seely Booth pulled his gaze from the ground, looking over at his comrade with a start. "Huh? Sorry, what was that?"

His uniformed companion sent him a sidelong glance. "Everything ok, Seely? I was just giving you details on today's training exercises."

"Yeah, everything's fine, Buck. I was just…thinking." His eyes danced back down to the small burst of goldenrod and eggshell-white silhouetted against the dusty ground.

Buck Walters looked over him with laughter bright in his eyes. "Thinking, huh? About daffodils?"

Booth didn't rise to the taunt. His eyes hungrily caressed the emerald curves of the full leaves, hovered on the ragged petals just managing to open themselves to the Afghan sky.

Walters took in his wistful silence, and the teasing in his gaze melted into something akin to sympathy. "Was she beautiful?"

Booth's attention snapped back to his companion with a jolt. "She…what?"

"Her. The one you left at home."

"Oh. Yeah." Booth looked back to the scrawny daffodils.

"Where'd you meet her?" Walters prodded gently, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Museum." The reply was automatic, programmed in with years of practice, and Booth almost smiled.

Walters was quiet for a long moment. "Mine loved roses," he finally said, running his fingers awkwardly through his cropped sandy hair. "Clichéd as they are. Always said there's nothing like them."

Booth's eyes settled on his comrade-in-arms with a new light of understanding. "Yeah." He paused, then reached out and clapped his companion on the shoulder. "All right, Masters, let's get back to the boys."

Masters turned to follow him obediently. He couldn't help but notice how Booth's eyes flicked once more to the dusty daffodils before they faded behind them.
