The 28th
Only five more minutes...
Raidou lay awake in the dark, propped up on pillows in the bed and staring out the open bedroom window at the stars scattered across the sky. His dark skin prickled where it was exposed to the cool breeze issuing through the open frame, stirring the leaves of the potted plant sitting on their shared dresser. Raidou caught a whiff of wood smoke and cut grass. Where his flesh was covered, the tokujo was overly warm and slightly tingly from the weight of another body. Raidou looked down at his lover sleeping beside and partly on top of him.
Only four more minutes...
The honey colored hair tickled his chest, moist breath ghosting over the rough folds of scar tissue. Raidou lightly brushed his fingers across the closed eyelids, the smooth cheeks, the parted lips. He smiled at the permanent indentation in the other man's lower lip, caused by years of carrying senbon between his teeth and resting the long needles on pliant flesh. Genma wrinkled his nose at the careful exploration. The older man's smile widened and he moved his hand to his lover's shoulder. Raidou's thumb gently circled the rounded cap of muscle, hand occasionally sweeping down the strong arm that was thrown over his belly, holding him to the bed.
Only three more minutes...
The clock on the bedside table ticked its way towards midnight, slowly but surely. Raidou kept the little clicks of time in the back of his head as he counted down, his thoughts wandering freely between Genma and the stars and everything that came before.
Only two more minutes...
Raidou thought about his family, how lucky he was to still have any family. His father and older brother were still remembered, still missed. Their mark could be seen in Raidou's smile and his gentle nature. His mother, sister and brother were still there for him. The tokujo cherished every Sunday dinner with their love and support. His nieces and nephews gave him hope for the future of the village. Raidou was surprised at every turn by their pranks and unconditional affection.
Only one more minute...
He thought about all his friends, so many over the years. Raidou remembered the faces of the fallen, their laughter and teasing grins and the sacrifice they made so their home would thrive. He thought of the friends still with him in the field and the village; sharing their joys and sorrows over cheap alcohol and good music, sharing their trust and chances over blades and jutsus. Raidou thought of Iruka and Kakashi. He thought of Genma.
No more minutes...
The clock struck midnight with an anti-climatic tick, no different than any other before it , or after. But the scarred man knew. Raidou's chin dipped down, lips pressing a kiss onto the honey colored crown. Genma released a soft sigh and snuggled further into the blankets, into the big man's embrace. The brunette laid his head back onto the pillow, russet eyes roving back towards the window to watch the stars under drooping lids.
Happy birthday to me...
