and afterwards…

Jean…vomited. How else was he supposed to react?

That…had not been Marco. It hadn't. That…that thing…was a corpse. Marco wasn't a corpse.

He was alive.

He was alive.

He was alive.

He was alive.

Jean blinked. He could still hear the medic scratching away on her clipboard. As if "Marco Bodt" was that long a name…to write…down…

Jean swallowed hard as he numbly walked away.

He was alive.

He was alive.

He was alive.

It was Marco who'd encouraged him to be a squad leader. "Kirschtein Squad"—it didn't seem right, though, without him and Marco being on the same team. They'd been together from day one—those days training seemed so far away now, but…but they'd happened.

He was alive.

He was alive.

Jean ducked into a building to escape the sights and smells of outside. While he tried to wrap his head around what he'd seen, he thought of time spent with Marco. So many nights, Jean had bothered Marco to stay up late talking.

"Marco."

"Jean…go to sleep." But he'd always said it with a smile in his voice.

"We'll be Military Police someday," Jean had said.

"Ah…" Again, he could hear the smile in Marco's voice. "Maybe, Jean."

"Don't say it like that." Jean tried not to chuckle. "Hey, Marco—"

"Tomorrow, Jean. Okay?"

There had been so many tomorrows. So, so many tomorrows…

Days when Ymir hadn't been so creepy. Days when Annie hadn't been a bitch. Days when Eren had managed to do something right. Days when Mikasa hadn't worried over every little thing concerning Eren. Days when Connie hadn't been an idiot. Days when Sasha hadn't been an utter klutz. Days when Armin hadn't been useless. Days… Days…days…

Jean missed Marco's comfort, Marco's warmth. Marco had been there when no one else looked. He had been the only one to see a leader in Jean. He had been the only one to see Jean. He had—

The male stopped thinking.

Was he really already using past tense?

No, no, no, that wasn't right…

Tonight—tonight, he'd return to the bunker and go to bed and ask Marco questions and they'd stay up late again and Marco would tell him to save it for tomorrow and Jean would reach for Marco and find his arm or his hand and hold it and Jean would be able to feel that smile he loved so much and Marco would say nothing because he'd just squeeze Jean's hand and Jean would know that they'd fall asleep and dream the same dream because their hands were linked and in that dream they'd be protecting the royals but at the same time they'd be safe because Marco could keep Jean in sight and Jean could protect him and—and—and—and—and—and—and—and—and—and—

But there would be no more holding Marco or whispering quietly to each other while the other guys slept. Marco was gone. But Jean—

He was alive.

…it was of little solace, however, even if it meant that he could live if only to remember Marco forever, keeping him alive in memory only…

Yeah…ep13 killed me inside. Jean… My baby… ;—; SnK is a show made of nothing but tragedy and angst; it really is one of those shows that, if you are a character in it, you will die. 0.0

Thanks for reading, though, and please do review!
