"You're allowed to lose a little bit of control." The blonde eyed doctor was staring her in the eye, daring her to lose control. How had things gotten so bad? If you would've asked her a year ago if she thought she'd be in a room about to cheat on her wife with only one leg she would've told you that you were crazy. In that moment, it was as if everything flashed through her mind. She thought about Sofia, her beautiful daughter.
How had she let things get so bad? Every night before the crash she would brush her daughter's long black locks and tell her the story of how her and her mother survived the car crash.
"Are you going to tell me the story again, Mama?" The two year old asked her. She looked up to her mama, and enjoyed hearing the same story each night. Some kids preferred books, but not Sofia. If her mama didn't tell her favorite story, she simply couldn't sleep.
"Of course, sweetheart." Arizona pulled out the white porcelain brush and settled Sofia between her legs. As she began brushing the thick locks, she felt a flashback sweep over her. "You and your mami were so strong. I asked her to marry me and a truck came out of nowhere. Sofia, I was so scared that I wouldn't get to meet you and that I would lose your mami… I didn't know what to do."
Switching to the other side of the little girl's head, she brushed a tear from her eye. "When we got to the hospital, things weren't looking great. Your mami and you had brain bleeds and when you were born I had to step in and save you. Do you know when I knew that I was meant to be your mama, Sofia?"
When the little girl shook her head no, Arizona continued. "When I was able to get you to breathe and I heard your light breathing against my stethoscope I knew that you were my girl. Those weeks after that we hard because all I wanted was for you to be okay. It took months, but eventually, you grew and became healthy and I was able to hold you. Sofia, sometimes families aren't always related by blood."
It was then that the little girl looked up at her mama in confusion. "They aren't, Mama?"
Arizona shook her head no. "No, they're not. Your mami and daddy had you, but that doesn't make me any less of your mama, you know why?"
"No, Mama."
"I love you so much as if you came from me." By then, tears strolled freely from Arizona's eyes.
"How much do you love me Mama?"
"You know when you don't listen to your mami and she tells you that you can't watch Dora for a week?" Sofia nodded. "I love you a million times more than how much you miss Dora."
Arizona watched as the little girl's eyes widened in wonder. "Mama, that's a lot!"
A dimpled smile crept upon the blonde's face as she nodded. "You're my girl, Sofia."
Arizona smiled as she thought back to that day. That's when she remembered where she was, and who she was with. This storm wasn't going to let up anytime soon and her beautiful wife was probably looking for her so she could spend the night cuddling with her and her wonderful daughter. Looking into Lauren's hopeful eyes, she sighed. "Lauren, I can't."
"Arizona, it's okay to lose—"
"No, Lauren… I've been losing control ever since my plane fell out of the sky. I have a little girl who is probably scared to death right now and a wife who needs me."
Lauren seemed pretty adamant about sleeping with Arizona, and raised her hand to rest it on the blonde's shoulder. "Arizona, you'll regret this…"
Grabbing Lauren's hand and placing it at her side, Arizona shook her head. "No, I won't. I have a family that loves me and the fact that you're still trying to break us up makes you disgusting in my eyes." Cupping the blonde's face in her hands, she sighed. "Take care of yourself."
With that, she turned around and walked out of the on call room, leaving a seething blonde in her wake.
