A crying girl was sitting at the edge of the side-walk , holding her scraped knee. The passing strangers seemed to care less, purposefully looking away or taking a sudden
interest at staring at their phone screens when the seven-year old girl cried for help. After a while, she caught on and figured that no one would help her, so she struggled to her
feet, but heard a voice.
"Are you okay?" She looked up to a concerned face of an eight-year old boy with a Band-aid. The girl nodded, but the boy knew better. He kneeled and gently placed the band-
aid onto the wound. "Better," he smiled and helped the girl up.
"H-Hanako," a small voice piped. The boy turned around and she repeated, "Fujiwara Hanako; my name," He chuckled and replied with a "Ruka. Nogi Ruka." Ruka held up a
hand and Hanako cautiously looked at it before hesitantly shaking it. "Let's be friends," Hanako said after a pregnant pause. Ruka smiled and nodded. "I think we'll be great
friends.
And they did.
"Hey Hanako! When we get to the park, let's play hide-and-go-seek!" Ruka ran alongside a smiling Hanako when they were racing to the green fields. The girl gave a "Yeah!" in
return and sped to the playground. "I won! I won! Ruka-kun, I beat you! I finally bea…" Hanako cut off her sentence when seeing a smirking Ruka already at the top of the slide.
The girl whined and yelled a "I'll get you next time," and they commenced their scheduled "hide-and-go-seek."
"Hey, Ruka?"
"Hm?"
"You'll never leave me right?"
"I'll never leave you, Hanako."
This happened everyday for one whole year; a year of endless fun and joy. It would have been an eternity, but it all came crashing down on a fateful Wednesday.
"W-What?" A shaking Hanako held Ruka's hand. "You're leaving?" The boy looked down at his feet and nodded his head. "But you promised we would always be like this. Why?"
"I have to move to another school and I won't be coming back." Ruka looked away to blink back the tears threatening to fall. Hanako couldn't take the shock and ran into Ruka's
arms and cried. His eyes widened for a fragment of time and hugged her tight. They broke the hug and Ruka took something out from his pocket.
"Here; wear this," He handed her a bracelet and looked into her teary eyes. "I swear I will come back for you and this is my proof of the promise." She nodded as he smiled at
her one last time before getting in a limo and driving off… and leaving her. for forever.
