"Trust tests!" their overly loud gym teacher called out, "Everyone grab a partner," quickly every best friend ran toward each other linking arms and slapping high fives. Within seconds everyone had a partner leaving Max and Fang alone. She looked at him with a questioning glance and he shrugged, gesturing for her to come over. As she settled in next to him the teacher's voice rang out again, "Now, you will turn your back to your partner, corss your arms over your chest and fall back. The point of this is to trust your partner enough to catch you." The teacher droned on for a while before Max heard the shrill sound of the whistle.
They followed suit as everyone in the room stood then she turned so she was facing Fang, he stared her down for a moment as they silently fought over who would fall first, finally Max gave in spinning around. She crossed her arms over her chest and prepared herself to fall back, she rocked on her heels letting her weight lean backwards and she began to fall. She wasn't sure what it was but the feeling of falling scared her, when you fly as high as she did you have to be careful about falling, she quickly stuck one foot back and stopped herself, just as Fangs hands touched her back, "Don't trust me, Maximum?" he whispered against her ear, she shivered as his warm breath tickled her skin. He had called her Maximum, he never called her that. Why did it make her stomach feel so funny? Like there were butterflies in there? She took a deep breath in to shake the feeling.
"No! I trust you Fang," she said quietly.
"Then fall," he said simply as she pulled away from his hands.
She sent a glare to him, free from his touch she felt more like herself again.
"You first," she said, still glaring. He smiled that sideways smile of his at her and she started to get that funny feeling again, down in stomach. She looked away for a moment, ruthlessly killing all the butterflies in a little insect massacre before she turned back. He turned around and she prepared herself as he crossed his arms over his chest. He leaned back, and he was falling, she stuck out her hands quickly and caught him as he fell. She pushed him back up, her hands felt tingly where they felt his warmth through his dark t-shirt.
"See," he said teasingly, "that wasn't so hard."
"Yeah, yeah," she said rolling her eyes. She turned around again, crossing her arms over her chest. She would never admit it to anyone, ever, but falling truly terrified her, that feeling... she felt goosebumps prickle on her skin, she hated that feeling. But Fang would catch her. She knew he would, because he said he would. And so she let herself fall, let herself feel that awful feeling, letting the adrenaline course through her. It was probably only a few seconds but she felt as if she were falling for minutes, hours, days and she almost screamed but then she felt the warmth of Fang's arms as he caught her and she let relief course through her.
He pushed her back up to a standing position, and she turned to look at him. She plastered her best fake smile on her face but it took him about two nanoseconds to realize that she had been truly scared. "Max?" he said, "You okay?"
"Yeah, fine," she lied through her teeth.
Then he did something unexpected, he hugged her, trapping her in an embrace that for some reason felt so welcoming and right, "I'll always be there to catch you when you fall," he whispered against her ear, sending more shivers down her spine.
"I know Fang," she whispered back. And she did know, because no matter what, Fang would be there for her, "I know."
