You Saved Me

A Dragon Age: Origins One Shot

(Author's Note: Prompted to write a party camp convo in response to my AU Ostagar fic. Here it is! Hope you like.)

The fire licked at the logs as I stared into its warming dance. So much ran through my mind as I kept my attention on the flames. Betrayed, for a second time in my life. Was there no end to this? I looked up for a moment, my long white blonde locks sliding over my shoulder as I pulled it all to the side. We could have died in that battle, thanks to that snake, Loghain. He would pay for what he's done to us, to the king and to the country. I looked up as the rest of my companions settled into their tents or just relaxed in front of the fire as I did. Our newest additions, Sten and Leliana sat in front of the fire while I looked to see Morrigan disappearing into her tent. I licked my lips and brought my cup to my lips, tasting the water. Maybe it was best to go to sleep now.

However, I looked up to see Alistair approaching me. He moved to sit beside me and his gaze then turned to the fire as well. I turned to him as I offered my cup of water to him and he took it graciously. I then looked back to the fire, my mind wandering as I did so. I then turned to Alistair, finding myself unable to contain my curiosity and my gratitude toward the man.

"You saved me." I blurted out, knowing how silly it sounded before looking away from him. I looked back to see Alistair staring at me with an odd look on his face. I laughed a little, taking my cup from him and looking back to the fire.

"Explain?" He asked, smiling slightly before I looked back to him. I shrugged my shoulders and moved to pour more water into my cup. Of course he had no idea what I meant, I didn't thoroughly explain myself. When did I ever? I then turned back to him, smiling ever so slightly.

"In Ostagar…We were under fire and you…shielded me." I said, bringing the cup to my lips as I watched him carefully. He looked away, as if he were remembering it himself before he turned back to me. He smiled gently at me and took the cup as I offered it to him. Then, I noticed the blush that edged his cheeks.

"I did what was right. Protected my fellow gray warden. N-nothing to that really is there?" He said and it caused me to look away. Then he stared at me, his eyes growing wider. "I didn't mean it to come out that way!" He tried to recover and all I could do was giggle at his awkwardness. He sighed, looking down at the cup as his cheeks seemed to redden more. He was clearly unaware of how to go about saying anything like this and it was sweet in a way. "What I meant to say was, in that moment, you were all I had left…I wasn't about to let them get you too. So I had to be quick." He said and turned back to me. I looked him over, my expression soft and intrigued by him. His blush didn't disappear as he waited for me to say something. Instead of words, I moved closer to him, my knee brushing against his arm. A motion that he took quick note of. I then leaned down and planted a kiss against his cheek.

"I applaud your quick thinking." I said gently to him before moving away from him slightly. As dim-witted as Morrigan seemed to think Alistair was, I for one appreciated having him in my life. He was sweet, loyal, and I couldn't help but notice how handsome he was. I grinned, biting my lower lip as I moved back to Alistair. My legs slid on either side of him, this causing him to look straight at the fire with wide eyes. The blush returned as I heard him gulp. Always the shy one. I stared at him with a familiar, sly grin.

"Alistair? Have I ever told you how handsome you are?"
